LuLu is the shared-source firewall for macOS. It’s goal is simple; block any unknown outgoing connections, until approved by the user. While it was designed to generically detect malware by flagging unauthorized networking connections, LuLu can also be used to block OS components or 3rd-party applications from transmitting information to remote servers.

What’s to like about LuLu? Lots!

The full source code for LuLu is available on GitHub. Such transparency allows anybody to audit its code, or understand exactly what is going on.

LuLu aims to alert you whenever an unauthorized network connection is attempted. As such, it can generically detect malware, or be used to block legitimate applications that may be transmitting private data to remote servers.

“Do one thing, do it well!” LuLu is designed as simply as possible. Sure this means complex features may not be available, but it also means it’s easier to use and has a smaller attack surface!

Want to know what network events are being detected? Or rules your users have added? LuLu provides simple mechanisms to subscribe to such events, and stores data such as rules in an open, easily digestible manner.

It’s also important to understand LuLu’s limitations! Some of these will be addressed as the software matures, while others are design decisions (mostly with the goal of keeping things simple).

Network Monitoring

By design, LuLu only monitors for outgoing network connections. Apple’s built in firewall does a great job blocking unauthorized incoming connections.

Rules

Currently, LuLu only supports rules at the ‘process level’, meaning a process (or application) is either allowed to connect to the network or not. As is the case with other firewalls, this also means that if a legitimate (allowed) process is abused by malicious code to perform network actions, this will be allowed.

Single User

For now, LuLu can only be installed for a single user. Future versions will likely allow it to be installed by multiple users on the same system.

Self-Defense

Legitimate attackers/security professionals know that any security tool can be trivially bypassed if specifically targeted – even if the tool employs advanced self-defense mechanisms. Such self-defense mechanisms are often complex to implement and in the end, almost always futile. As such, by design LuLu (currently) implements few self-defense mechanisms. For example, an attacker could enumerate all running processes to find the LuLu component responsible for displaying alerts and terminate it (via a sigkill).

You’ve probably been seeing alerts like this one:

Apple has announced that macOS 10.14 will be the last version capable of running 32-bit applications.

As Apple finalizes its transition to all-64-bit code, Mojave and High Sierra present an alert like this when you launch a 32-bit application. While it’s not a crisis at present, you’ll need to update or upgrade those applications before you update to macOS 10.15 later this year.

Go64 makes it easier to go 64-bit by helping you…

  • Take an inventory of the apps on your Mac and see which ones are still 32-bit.
  • Go to a developer’s website or search the web for update or upgrade information.
  • Keep track of upgrade costs so you can plan your spending to get all the upgrades you need.

Which apps will stop working after Mojave and why?

Any app that’s built with Apple’s 32-bit software libraries will need to be updated so it will run in 64-bit mode. These are primarily older applications, but some newer specialty apps are also still 32-bit.

As Apple says, “The technologies that define today’s Mac experience—such as Metal graphics acceleration—work only with 64-bit apps. To ensure that the apps you purchase are as advanced as the Mac you run them on, all future Mac software will eventually be required to be 64-bit.”

How do I find the 32-bit apps on my system?

Apple’s support article explains how to use the built-in macOS System Report to identify 32-bit apps on your system.

However, once they’ve been identified, looking them up and locating the developers’ contact information can be a painstaking process if you’ve got more than a few. In addition, the System Report doesn’t account for apps that are themselves 64-bt, but that contain 32-bit plugins, frameworks or services. These apps may or may not run correctly on macOS 10.15. That’s why we made Go64!

Advanced Sharpening and Noise Reduction Algorithms

Iridient Developer offers SIX advanced sharpening methods, including “Iridient Reveal”, a “super” sharpener utilizing aspects of both state of the art edge enhancement techniques and deconvolution, traditional unsharp masking, high pass, difference of gaussians, a unique “hybrid” sharpening algorithm and an advanced Richardson-Lucy Deconvolution based method. Built with creative sound design at the top of the agenda, Godfazer spatially and spectrally transforms signals of all kinds with its versatile Ensemble module and two dual-modulated Multi Filters.

Vintage devices and more
Godfazer’s Ensemble section offers a wide range of delay- and amplitude-modulating vintage device emulations, including BBD-based choruses, Solina-style ensembles and rotary speakers, as well as a variety of original tremolos, auto-panners and other models. But that’s only the beginning! Alongside the Ensemble, two identical Multi Filters each feature 40 spectacularly diverse filter types, from dual shelving EQs, low/high/band-pass models and formant filters, to an extensive selection of vintage and modern phasers.

Powerful modulation
Bringing movement and dynamism to the Multi Filters, Godfazer’s dual Modulators each enable one of four styles of cutoff/center frequency modulation to be brought into play. Apply static offset to the left and right channels with the Constant Modulator; get things wobbling with the tempo-syncable, pannable, phase-adjustable LFO; generate a modulation signal based on input amplitude with the envelope Follower; and hand craft your own synced or free-running cyclical progressions with the 16-step Step sequencer.

Freedom of routing
Both Modulators are routed independently to each Multi Filter, for truly complex signal blending, and the polarity of every input can be inverted at a click. The Multi Filters themselves are configurable for parallel or serial signal flow using six topology options, which also determine the position of the Ensemble within the chain.

… Of course, Godfazer also includes all the standard features of the SilverLine plugin series, including 64-bit internal processing, three quality options for real-time playback and offline rendering, a resizable GUI, and a tagged preset browser. From enhancing beats, thickening basslines and glamorizing vocals, to animating pads and bringing life to keys and FX, no modulation-based task is beyond its sonic remit.
