With per-step panning across up to eight sequencer steps, plus one-shot and looping playback modes, transform static sounds into rippling rhythmic structures and fashion completely unique delay patterns from scratch.

Dual Mode provides Ping Pong and Criss Cross stereo routing options, with controls for custom time ratios and presets for instant polyrhythmic and psuedo-random repeat patterns. The original hardware was built by an ingenious group of esoteric audiophiles, who cherry-picked the best analog components from a multitude of manufacturers. Lindell Audio are the first to faithfully capture its five iconic EQ bands with their incredibly customized filter networks – all those inductors, resistors and capacitors. Hear them working their magic in the airy highs, tight lows, and midrange presence they add to drums, and the smooth top-end and enhanced “air” they bring to vocals.

The high point of analog mastering EQs
Lindell Audio has resurrected one of the few A-Tier passive tube EQs built around the turn of the century. This legacy is also a big part of its special sonic profile. Its construction combined classic topologies with modern engineering approaches. The result is a premium analog tone with a significantly lower noise floor and greater clarity. This really counts during mastering where all those imperfections are applied across the mix and really add up. Lindell has faithfully replicated the original hardware, revered to this day. Versions with stepped gains are known by some as the EQ “cheat control”. Bands are expertly configured to offer musically beautiful EQ combinations. Lindell has modeled the continuous gain controls on one of the earliest units for greater flexibility. You can easily dial in those cult combinations by selecting the whole values – it just takes a few turns to hear something special. The Chandler GAV19T was inspired by classic British amps like Selmer, Vox and Marshall but with new added features that make it incredibly flexible. From the bias control that affects only the preamp tube bias, to the drive section that provides a treble boost, a full range boost and two flavors of mid boost for just the power amp section, to the Baxandall style tone controls, this amp’s palette runs from clean to crunchy to shred-worthy chaos.

Brainworx, in partnership with Chandler Ltd. has faithfully recreated this special amp as a native plugin; so now you can record killer sounding guitar tracks through your interface while a baby is sleeping next door, or quickly bring a weak sounding guitar track in your mix up to snuff. The 75 impulse responses, developed at the Brainworx studio, using their vast array of speaker cabinets, mics and outboard gear, instantly give you sounds it would take an experienced engineer in a state of the art room all day to get.

The controls on THE OVEN may seem unusual at first—but that’s a feature, not a bug. They are designed to help you turn off your technical mind and start making bold and creative choices immediately. Use the COOK control to add thick bloom, pentode tube drive, and the three BURNERS to layer in multiband saturation and tonal shaping options. Turn up the TEMP to push them harder for added color and mojo, or switch from BAKE to BROIL and ELEC to GAS to change the voicing and response of the tube circuit. By using in-key EQ, you’ll get warmer lows and sweeter highs when boosting, while out-of-key cuts will lead to clearer, more focused bass and less harsh highs that retain their musicality.

Simple Key Detection
Key detection lets you automatically capture the key of your music through audio or MIDI, making it quick and simple to set up sweetening, tonal boosts. For a choice of broader or more focused tonal colours, you can add or remove notes in the currently selected scale. Key Switching? No problem, Scaler EQ can assign different scales and keys to ‘Scale Switchers’ that are fully automatable.

Musician- and Producer-Friendly Band Types
Scaler EQ’s harmonic band types aren’t the only option for boosts and cuts. The traditional array of shelves, bells and high-pass/low-pass filters will be instantly familiar and simple to use for every producer, and there’s more to reward creative exploration in Scaler EQ.

The Magic Shelf
Scaler EQ’s proprietary Magic Shelf bands work with stereo properties in mind. Boost a Magic Shelf in the bass region, and it will work harder on the band’s mid signal than it does on its side information. Reduce the level of that bass Magic Shelf to make it a cut, and you’ll cut the side signal more than you cut the mid information.

The high-frequency Magic Shelf works in a complementary way, increasing sides with more strength and reducing mids more heavy-handedly. With its Range control increased, any Magic Shelf band introduces a complementary scoop or bump before its corner frequency.

Mastering Grade Limiters and Meters
Scaler EQ acts as an all in one tool box on your master channel with adjustable input and output levels, Peak and RMS Meters and two safety limiters that can be driven into at input or output stage for increased loudness.

Transparent yet assertive, smooth yet punchy, this style of VCA compressor is a perennial favorite on mix bus, drums, vocals, bass, and any source that demands aggressive compression without compromising on tone. Now with three independent bands for separate compression of lows, mids and highs, the MBC solves even more problems and opens up more possibilities than its predecessors.

Easily split process your bass, get more transparent drum compression, and even greater vocal control
Just like the single-band version, the MBC is a must-have on the mix bus. But with its multiple bands, it does so much more: Use it to split process your bass, getting tight, well-controlled lows without over-compressing your mids. Add some control to the midrange of your drums without adding artifacts to your cymbals or weakening your kick drum. Give vocals plenty of squeeze without undue sibilance, and much more.

Unique features for custom-tailoring your compression
The MBC is full of features for adjusting the color of your compression, like Lindell’s added “SMASH” button for extra crush on drum tracks and vocal performances. A special sidechain filter circuit applies optional low cut and high boost to the compressor’s detector. You can even select between “feedforward” and “feedback” operation, or decide exactly how much the left and right channels should interact with each other.

Make masters and stems shine
In addition to being perfect for regular mixing, the multiband characteristics of the MBC make it even better suited to mastering applications and working from stems. When you are looking to solve problems and reshape sounds while adding some upfront and assertive character, the MBC has your back.

Next generation dynamics processing
ADPTR Audio’s Sculpt represents the future of dynamic and tonal control. Designed for master and group buses, Sculpt lets you thoroughly and cleanly reshape your sounds in ways that other processors simply can’t. At its heart are a remarkably transparent “Upward” Compressor, a more traditional Downward Compressor, and powerful Tonal and Transient “Sculpt” sections. Use it to add refining touches to masters and mix buses, or to enhance specific elements inside of samples, stems and instrument groups.

Four modules running in parallel
Sculpt is built on top of four dynamic modules that run in parallel. The Upward Compression module offers an uncommon spin on dynamic control with greater transparency, while a high-quality Downwards Compression offers more conventional dynamic control. The one-of-a-kind Tone Sculpt module accentuates or suppresses specific aspects of your audio, while the Transient Sculpt module manipulates the onset of each sound for precise control over its sonic “envelope”. Each module has its own mute, solo and output meter so you can see and hear how they’re affecting your audio.

A master tone manipulator
Each of Sculpt’s modules come with frequency controls that affect the way Sculpt analyzes your signal. These function as sidechain EQ controls within the compressor modules, as tonal balance controls within the Tone Sculpt module, and as transient selection controls within the Transient Sculpt module. The Tone Sculpt module also includes a tonal balance graph that displays the frequency balance of tracks, allowing for constant tone monitoring. The beauty of Sculpt is that it doesn’t apply frequency-dependent processing. Instead, it affects the gain of your input on a sample-by-sample basis, which leads to unbelievably transparent results.

Distortion-free dynamics control
Sculpt uses a state-of-the-art Envelope Detection Algorithm (EDA) that mimics the way humans hear sounds, making it more responsive than conventional compressor technology. EDA detects the envelope of sounds with lightning-fast precision, allowing Sculpt to operate distortion-free, even when processing complex material using super-fast attack and release settings. Use Sculpt to apply light to heavy sidechain compression without worrying about distortion ever again.

Auto-Gain that actually works
The issue with most dynamics processors is that they don’t take perceived loudness into account when applying makeup gain, meaning you often end up with a “level matched” signal that sounds much louder or quieter than your input signal. Sculpt analyzes the full frequency response of your incoming audio signal and adjusts its knobs accordingly, allowing you to make accurate level-matched A/B comparisons. The presets included with Sculpt also adapt themselves based on the dynamics of your incoming audio signal so that you can hear how they’re intended to sound.

The action buttons are distributed between three general task panels: Portrait, Beauty, and Scene. Below the tab region is a space set aside for Power Tools + Techniques, and Export + User Actions. The User Actions buttons can be assigned using the Actions panel, allowing you to combine existing actions or easily use your own favorite custom actions from the same interface. Also included are a few preset color-grading styles for popular looks, along with some RAW filters that can be loaded in Camera Raw or Lightroom.

Most of the features included will be familiar to retouchers and, in a few cases, there are multiple choices for a given technique, such as various dodge-and-burn methods. Several techniques also go so far as to auto-generate masks and apply them to neutral adjustment layers, meaning you can focus on working the image instead of Photoshop’s Layers panel.

If you’re not satisfied with the mask, it can be manually adjusted easily, or you can use the Scene tab to generate additional masks. One of the standout features here is how the masks are generated as previews using a complex set of adjustment layers. Once you apply the mask preview to an adjustment layer, or load it as a selection, the mask preview layers are deleted so you don’t clutter up your workspace. They can easily be reloaded at any time.

Pro Workflow X is really user-friendly once it’s installed. The layout is clean and makes sense, common tools are always available, and the developer includes pop-up dialogs (explaining how to use the features) for most of the tools. You can turn this feature off for each individual action from the Actions panel. Choosing a technique almost always results in being ready to go with the right tool preset loaded for the task at hand. But you can easily modify or choose other tools as you go.

The majority of tasks related to retouching portraits can be accomplished directly from the panel. Selection, healing, and brush tools are given their own space at the top, along with Undo and Redo buttons that allow you to step forward and backward through history. Another powerful addition is using smart filters for Liquify, which lets you update prior retouching elements without losing work on reshaping features. The color-grading section makes it easy to apply common looks to a series of images for thematic consistency. More specific techniques are available for detailed work on makeup, eyes, skin correction, and hair.

There’s not much to find fault with in this panel, although a couple of special effects features included for painting and grunge looks seem out of place in context with the rest of the panel’s functionality. While they produce good results, they seem like a novelty bonus, and wouldn’t be missed if left out altogether. It would also be useful to have an easier way to toggle the Help dialogs and change specific technique settings without having to edit the actions directly. No doubt some users won’t find their favorite version of a particular technique here, but they can be added to the User Actions panel.

Installation may be intimidating for some users, since you have to run a few manual operations and find the appropriate file locations; however, thorough instructions are included, and the entire event takes only a minute or two. There’s also a very useful walk-through of features available as an indexed video on the developer’s YouTube channel.

Overall, Pro Workflow X is a worthy weapon in the war on wasted time. The price may seem high, but the time saving represented has the potential to pay for itself with just a handful of images.

How Does It Work?

Scaler is a plugin instrument capable of outputting MIDI as well as audio. With regard to the latter, a piano, guitars, strings and several sampled synth sounds are built in for scratch work, so you can quickly get a chord progression together for export as a MIDI file entirely within it.

Obviously, though, the idea is to trigger other instruments via Scaler, and how this is set up depends on the host DAW. For VST hosts, Scaler loads as an instrument plugin onto a MIDI track, the output of which is sent to a second track (hosting the target instrument) using the DAW’s routing system.

For Audio Unit hosts (ie, Logic Pro), the included ScalerControl MIDI effect plugin is loaded up instead. This is identical to the regular Scaler, but sits in front of the target instrument on the same track, outputting MIDI directly to it. It’s certainly the more elegant of the two approaches, although it only captures the raw triggering notes to the track, not the chords output by the plugin.

How Does It Work?

Scaler is a plugin instrument capable of outputting MIDI as well as audio. With regard to the latter, a piano, guitars, strings and several sampled synth sounds are built in for scratch work, so you can quickly get a chord progression together for export as a MIDI file entirely within it.

Obviously, though, the idea is to trigger other instruments via Scaler, and how this is set up depends on the host DAW. For VST hosts, Scaler loads as an instrument plugin onto a MIDI track, the output of which is sent to a second track (hosting the target instrument) using the DAW’s routing system.

For Audio Unit hosts (ie, Logic Pro), the included ScalerControl MIDI effect plugin is loaded up instead. This is identical to the regular Scaler, but sits in front of the target instrument on the same track, outputting MIDI directly to it. It’s certainly the more elegant of the two approaches, although it only captures the raw triggering notes to the track, not the chords output by the plugin.
