Octavo

A native macOS imposition app that turns a finished PDF into correctly ordered print sheets for folding, stapling, and binding—without spreadsheet page math or wasted test prints.

Indie studio Double & Thrice built Octavo for creators who already have a layout in Pages, Affinity, or InDesign and need the step after design: arranging reader-order pages onto press sheets, adding fold and staple marks, and sending jobs through the macOS print system. Import a PDF or images, clean up crooked scans in a source pass, then choose an imposition style such as saddle-stitch booklet, multi-signature book, tri-fold brochure, business-card grid, eight-page mini zine, or concertina zine.

From source cleanup to print

The workflow stays task-based and visual. On the source page you can rotate, flip, straighten, correct perspective, crop margins, and apply filters such as threshold or levels before layout. Placement controls handle inside and outside margins, scaling per page or document-wide, bleed, and previews in both reader spreads and imposed sheets. Marks and page numbers support fold lines, crop marks, staple guides, comb-binding hole patterns, and Arabic, Roman, or alphabetic numbering with cover skips when needed.

Media, export, and licensing

Named media types let you assign different paper sizes, trays, and printers to covers versus interior pages, with blank-sheet insertion when stock changes. Export imposed PDFs or print directly with automatic or manual duplex workflows. Octavo is free to download on the Mac App Store with a one-time in-app unlock around twenty-five dollars; trial output adds a small banner on printed pages while mini zines remain free according to the vendor. Projects save locally with full undo and redo, Dark Mode support, and no subscription.

System requirements and fit

The Mac App Store build requires macOS 15.6 or later and is offered in English and German. Octavo is not a replacement for professional layout software on long typographic books, but it fits zine makers, small publishers, and office users who lost booklet printing in a driver update. Version 1.2.1 is a maintenance release that fixes whole-page positioning accuracy on printed sheets.
