A hybrid software synthesizer plugin for Mac that combines wavetable, sample, multisample, granular, and spectral oscillators with a visual editor, deep modulation matrix, and clip sequencer inside your DAW.

Steve Duda’s Serum became a standard for modern bass, lead, and pad design because it made wavetable morphing immediate instead of spreadsheet-driven. Serum 2 expands the original with three primary oscillators, dual filters, ten LFOs, an expanded effects rack, a new mixer, and a clip sequencer for phrase-level programming. Existing Serum 1 owners receive the upgrade free from Xfer Records with lifetime update support according to the vendor.

Sound design on Mac

Load the plugin as AU, VST3, or AAX in Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Bitwig, Digital Performer, Pro Tools, or other 64-bit hosts on macOS. The wavetable oscillator adds smooth interpolation, dual warps, FM, ring modulation, and filtering. Multisample mode ships with orchestral, choir, piano, and guitar libraries in SFZ format; sample mode handles loops, slicing, and tape-style rate changes; granular and spectral modes reshape audio at the grain or harmonic level. Over six hundred factory presets and nearly three hundred wavetables ship with the installer.

Workflow and system requirements

A redesigned preset browser, eight macros, improved modulation routing, and thirteen effect types with splitter modules keep complex patches manageable. The demo runs fifteen minutes per session before requiring a license purchase at roughly two hundred forty-nine dollars from Xfer. Mac builds need macOS High Sierra or later on Intel or macOS Big Sur or later on Apple Silicon per the product page. Version 2.0.24 is a maintenance release focused on host compatibility, MPE behavior, preferences UI, and crash fixes rather than new oscillator types.

Who it fits

Serum 2 targets producers who want one flagship synth for EDM, film, and pop rather than a rack of niche instruments. CPU use is comparable to Serum 1 for equivalent patches according to Xfer, though granular, spectral, and dense unison stacks can still tax older MacBooks. It is not a standalone app—you need a compatible DAW host. Serum 1 presets load in Serum 2, but Serum 2 presets do not open in Serum 1.
