A menu bar utility for Mac that puts system output, input, and Sound Effects devices plus per-application volume, routing, and effects one click away—without opening System Settings for every call or playlist.

Rogue Amoeba built SoundSource for Mac users frustrated by macOS treating all application audio as one lump: HDMI outputs that ignore keyboard volume keys, Zoom louder than music, and no quick way to send one app to AirPlay while the rest stays on built-in speakers. The app lives in the menu bar, shows active apps and devices, and exposes controls that Apple never bundled into a single panel.

Per-app and system audio control

Adjust each application’s volume independently, mute apps with a click, and redirect outputs so, for example, a browser plays through headphones while notifications use the Mac speaker. System-wide and per-app paths support a built-in ten-band Lagutin equalizer, Magic Boost, Volume Overdrive, Headphone EQ, and third-party Audio Unit plugins. Super Volume Keys restore keyboard volume control on outputs macOS normally ignores, and grouped output devices let you play to multiple speakers at once.

Devices, AirPlay, and automation

The Devices window centralizes sample rate, balance, input level, and preferred device order for Output, Input, and Sound Effects. Stream any app’s audio to AirPlay hardware on your network, create Quick Configs for common setups, and trigger changes through Apple Shortcuts. SoundSource 6 added a redesigned interface, richer device management, and lower CPU use in the ARK audio engine according to the vendor; version 6.1 extended Quick Config access from the menu bar and improved Bluetooth stability.

Licensing and compatibility

SoundSource sells as a one-time license from Rogue Amoeba with a trial that applies usage limits until you purchase. Current builds require macOS 15 Sequoia through macOS 26 Tahoe; older macOS releases use legacy SoundSource 5 downloads from the vendor. Version 6.1.1 is a maintenance release that fixes equalizer scaling, volume curves, default-device handling, AirPlay volume memory, and several regressions from the prior 6.1 update.
