A menu bar battery utility for MacBook that stops charging at a set percentage, monitors health over time, and adds Pro-only modes to reduce heat stress and calibration drift while the Mac stays plugged in.

AppHouseKitchen from Austria launched AlDente as a practical alternative to leaving a MacBook at one hundred percent all day. The free tier covers the core charge limiter: set a maximum between twenty and one hundred percent, and macOS pauses battery charging while the machine still runs from the adapter. AlDente Pro expands that foundation with heat protection, sailing mode, top-up and discharge controls, calibration mode, MagSafe LED control on supported models, scheduled tasks, customizable menu bar icons, and richer dashboard graphs.

How it works day to day

After installation you choose a charge ceiling—often around eighty percent for desk use—and AlDente enforces it through the menu bar popover. Pro users can discharge on demand, run automatic discharge routines, manage clamshell behavior, and inspect battery level history, temperature, and capacity trends. Version 1.38 rebuilt the Power Flow diagram with lower CPU use on recent macOS releases and added SoC, USB, and display power readings where the operating system exposes them. Schedule templates and Apple Shortcuts actions for low and high power modes help automate limits around work hours or travel.

Pro licensing and compatibility

AlDente Pro sells as an annual subscription or lifetime license from the vendor, with Setapp as an alternative channel; one license key activates on up to three macOS user accounts across one to three MacBooks according to AppHouseKitchen. The app supports a broad list of Intel and Apple Silicon MacBook models published on the vendor site. Starting with the 1.38 line, macOS 12 Monterey is the minimum supported release; Big Sur users remain on AlDente 1.37.3 per the FAQ. Email support is limited to Pro customers.

Who it fits

macOS includes Optimized Battery Charging, but AlDente Pro suits owners who want explicit percentage caps, heat thresholds, and manual discharge workflows rather than fully automated Apple scheduling. It is not a hardware repair tool and cannot reverse chemically aged cells, yet consistent charge limiting can slow calendar wear for docked laptops. Version 1.38.1 is a maintenance release that fixes menu bar icon behavior, Help page messaging, and system load readings on select hardware.
