A Mac-native font manager built for designers who need fast previews, flexible organization, and reliable activation — without the clutter of a general-purpose file browser.

If you work with hundreds or thousands of typefaces, Font Book quickly becomes limiting: previews are basic, tagging is rigid, and keeping Adobe apps in sync with the fonts you activate is often manual. Typeface treats your library as a design workspace. You browse live-rendered specimens, adjust preview text, size, tracking, and colors on the fly, then narrow the list with tags, filters, and search scopes. Large collections stay manageable through nested tags, the Quick Collection for candidates, and optional synced folders that pick up newly downloaded files on refresh.

Preview, pair, and inspect

Beyond grid browsing, Typeface offers body-text layout presets so you can judge readability in article-like blocks, not only headline samples. Pairing Studio (Pro) lets you mix display and text fonts in multi-block layouts, duplicate studios for side-by-side comparisons, and export or print results. For technical review, List view surfaces metadata such as foundry, version, and file path; the Characters tab supports search, categories, and vector export of individual glyphs. Variable fonts and OpenType features — including localized forms by language in recent releases — can be inspected and tuned with live feedback.

Activation and workflow

Pro features include in-place font activation that persists across restarts, temporary activation for trials, and auto activation when you open documents in supported design apps such as Illustrator, InDesign, and QuarkXPress. Font Switch lets you drop a font onto an open app from Typeface. Google Fonts catalog sync, duplicate finding, PDF export, and migration from FontExplorer X or Suitcase Fusion round out a workflow aimed at professional libraries rather than casual Font Book users.

The app requires macOS 12 or later, runs natively on Apple Silicon, and is sold as a one-time Pro purchase (with a free limited trial) via the developer store, Mac App Store, or Setapp — not a subscription. Version 4.4.1 is a maintenance release focused on Illustrator auto activation, variable-axis naming, and stability fixes on multi-display and Tahoe setups.
