A Mac utility that plays mechanical keyboard sound effects tied to real typing force, using the accelerometer inside Apple Silicon MacBooks instead of playing the same clip on every keystroke.

MacBook keyboards are quiet by design, which suits open offices but can feel flat if you prefer the click and thock of a mechanical board. Haptyk runs in the background and triggers switch samples as you type. According to the vendor, it reads the internal MEMS accelerometer roughly a thousand times per second to estimate impact force, then selects a matching intensity from soft through slam tiers in each sound pack.

How velocity-sensitive typing sounds work

Most keyboard sound apps loop fixed samples or random variants regardless of pressure. Haptyk maps gentle taps to lighter clips and hard presses to heavier ones, with cross-fade between tiers so transitions stay smooth. A native C audio engine keeps keystroke-to-sound latency under one millisecond according to the product page. The app is a pure macOS build without Electron, aimed at low overhead during long coding or writing sessions.

Sound packs and setup

Haptyk ships with more than sixteen mechanical switch packs, including a free Biscuit Tactile set and Pro packs such as Cherry MX Blue, Holy Panda, Alpaca Linear, and Buckling Spring–style profiles. Each pack records four velocity levels from real switches. Pro unlock adds sensitivity tuning and support for importing community packs. A three-day trial exposes full velocity detection and all packs without a credit card; Pro is a one-time $8 purchase with lifetime updates per the vendor.

Compatibility and fit

Haptyk targets MacBook Pro M2/M3/M4 and later, MacBook Air M3 and later, with M1 Pro and M1 Max reported by users; macOS 13 Ventura or newer is required. It is sold only via direct download, not the Mac App Store. The accelerometer interface is undocumented by Apple and may change in future macOS releases—a risk the refund policy acknowledges. Haptyk suits MacBook owners who want tactile audio feedback without an external keyboard; it is a poor fit for desktop Macs, shared quiet spaces, or anyone who needs a published changelog for every point release.
