On a modern Mac, the menu bar fills quickly: cloud sync, VPN, battery tools, media apps, developer utilities, and system indicators all compete for space—especially on notched MacBook screens. Bartender sits between macOS and those items. You choose what stays visible, what moves into Bartender Bar, and how new icons should behave when apps add them later. The result is a cleaner bar that still gives one-click access to everything you rely on.

How layout and Bartender Bar work

Most setup happens on the layout page, where icons appear as draggable tiles you can assign to shown, hidden, or always-hidden sections. Bartender Bar collapses overflow into a single control; clicking it reveals hidden items without permanently expanding the bar. Groups let related icons live together, and triggers can show or hide items when battery level, Wi‑Fi state, or image conditions change. Live mode keeps the bar sorted as apps come and go, while on-demand mode rearranges only when you ask—useful if you prefer Bartender not to touch the cursor until you initiate a sort.

Widgets, styles, and daily workflow

Beyond hiding icons, Bartender 6 supports custom widgets (still marked beta by the vendor) and menu bar styling on macOS Tahoe, including glass-like treatments that match the current system look. Triggers and image-based rules suit power users who want VPN or backup icons visible only when active. For simpler needs, a preset that hides infrequent utilities and leaves clock, Wi‑Fi, and sound controls visible is often enough. Bartender 6 targets macOS Tahoe and Sequoia; if you stay on Sonoma, the same license also covers Bartender 5 per the vendor’s compatibility guidance.

Licensing and fit

Bartender 6 is sold as a one-time purchase that includes all updates within version 6, with optional Bartender Pro and Mega Supporter tiers for Top Shelf and long-term upgrades. One license covers Macs you personally use, and a four-week trial is available without a card. Settings from Bartender 5 do not import into version 6 because of platform changes, so plan a short reconfiguration. Version 6.6.2 focuses on live-mode stability, layout-page reliability, and lower resource use during everyday menu bar management.
