A lightweight, native macOS word processor built by a solo developer to sit between TextEdit and Microsoft Word: fast launch, offline editing, no account, and enough format support for real document exchange.

Verso opens .docx and legacy .doc files directly—no import wizard—and saves back in formats Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice can read. Track Changes underlines insertions, shows deletions, and lists every edit in a sidebar where you accept or reject individually or in bulk. Comments round-trip through .docx as well, which matters when a draft is part of a review workflow rather than solo notes. The app also handles .odt, .rtf, .txt, .md, .html, and PDF export, plus .dotx templates.

Writing focus and technical extras

Focus Mode (⌘⇧F) dims everything except the paragraph you are working on; five page backgrounds (light, off-white, sepia, dark, and auto) and system-aware light/dark themes reduce eye strain. Markdown files open as rich text with syntax-highlighted code blocks in 22 languages, Mermaid diagram support, and save back with structure preserved. LaTeX math renders inline and in display blocks; tables, footnotes, auto-generated tables of contents, multi-column layout, headers, footers, find-and-replace, and a customizable toolbar cover typical long-form needs. BibTeX import supports formatted bibliographies in APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, and Vancouver styles.

Licensing and build 1.0.32

The Mac App Store build offers a seven-day full trial, then a $14.99 one-time in-app unlock with no subscription. The app requires macOS 14 or later, ships in about 8 MB, runs on SwiftUI and AppKit without Electron, and works fully offline with no data collection per the store privacy label. UI localization covers 16 languages including Arabic, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese. Build 1.0.32 is listed on the developer site; the App Store may show a newer build by the time you install. Apple did not publish separate What’s New text for 1.0.32 at research time—the following update (1.0.33) added tab stops, document templates, and ruler improvements—so check the in-app updater for notes specific to your installed version.
