Cotypist An Apple Silicon Mac utility that predicts your next words inline inside Mail, Slack, browsers, notes apps, and most other text fields, running entirely on your Mac instead of routing keystrokes through a cloud chatbot. The workflow is deliberately minimal. Install the notarized app from the developer, grant Accessibility permission so macOS can insert suggestions, wait for the local language model to download once, and then type as you always would. Gray inline completions appear ahead of the cursor; press Tab to accept the next word or the full line, or keep typing to ignore or steer the prediction. Cotypist is built to finish sentences you would have written yourself, not to replace your voice with generic AI prose. On-device engine and privacy According to Accelerated Thought, Cotypist runs llama.cpp with a Gemma 4 model locally (roughly 3 GB on disk) and uses about 1–2.5 GB of RAM while active. Processing stays on the Mac: no API calls, no cloud logging, and offline use including on a plane. macOS also blocks password fields from being read. Optional encrypted local learning can carry your vocabulary, names, and phrasing across apps without uploading text to servers. Features that matter day to day Beyond raw autocomplete, the app offers inline typo corrections, colon-triggered emoji suggestions, screen-aware context so replies match the thread or document you are in, and multilingual support including in-sentence code-switching. Shortcuts cover word-by-word acceptance, dismissing suggestions, force-activating in terminals, and temporarily toggling completions per app. Free users get full suggestions for the first 100 completed words each day; Plus and Pro subscriptions remove limits and add custom instructions, larger models, multi-Mac licensing, and Pro-only Labs experiments. Compatibility and honest limits Cotypist requires macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon; Intel Macs are not supported. It works out of the box in Safari, Chrome, Apple Mail, Word, Notes, Notion, Obsidian, Messages, and many more, though some apps need a one-time setup step (for example Google Docs accessibility mode). It is strongest in VS Code and Cursor sidebar chats, not the main editor, where dedicated coding assistants are a better fit. Terminals such as Ghostty, cmux, and Warp are listed as unsupported in the knowledge base. Build 2026.3.1 sits in the developer’s calendar-version 2026.x line distributed via direct notarized DMG with auto-updates. Accelerated Thought does not publish a dedicated public changelog page for individual builds such as 2026.3.1; if you need patch-level details, check the in-app updater after installing.
