Dual Spring Reverb is the first ever plugin to model wave propagation in helical springs. The audio engine is built entirely upon the simulation of the inherent physical equations. This gives creative control of the setup of the springs, allowing you to design your own unique sound. Customisable spring setup
Dual Spring Reverb has two separate springs which can be configured independently. Both springs have controls for the echo time and chirp cutoff frequency, and you can set the chirps to spread out over time. In addition there are global controls for the level of ‘boing’, the damping and tone, as well as a 7-band mode equalizer. Stereo output is taken from the ends of each spring and these are mixed together via a cross-fade. Altogether this allows for a huge range of spring tones that can be tailored to your individual material.

Pure physical modelling
The plugin uses a purely mathematical model of spring vibration to create sound. Our modelling starts from a description of wave propagation in elastic helical structures. The physical properties such as length, wire radius, and pitch angle are then mapped to the perceptual parameters as detailed above. Physical modelling of prepared strings
Preparation is based on mathematical modelling of 3 basic elements; strings which can be configured as bars, a rattle that joins strings together, and a dynamic fret. Each voice contains a pair of strings which are excited with either a customisable pluck, a bow, or side-chained audio. The acoustic model’s properties are tailored by you, generating a range of sounds from unique instruments to experimental soundscapes. Preparation uses our latest research into collision modelling and fast solver techniques.

Nonlinear physical modelling
The nonlinear strings can be excited with a customisable pluck, allowing you to choose different impulses for the minimum and maximum Note-On velocity. Or use the scrape of a virtual bow, with bowing force controlled by the Pitch bend wheel and position by the Mod wheel.

Dynamic Fret and Rattle
The rattle element sits across the 2 strings and transfers energy from collisions on one end to the other. This has a variable mass on each end, as well as stiffness, gap and edge parameters. The fret is underneath the strings and each one can hit it depending on the amplitude of vibration and the distance between them.

Modulation and FX
Shape your sound with fully fledged Equalizer, Compressor, Mods, Shaper, and Delay/Reverb effects, five modules that can be re-ordered then programmed deeper in their own tab. Derailer is a physical modelling instrument plugin built from mathematical models of strings, bars and spring connection elements.

Nonlinear Physical Modelling
Derailer is a physical modelling system built from 3 basic elements. Strings which can be plucked or bowed, metal bars which can be pitched or act as resonators, and nonlinear springs which can be used to connect resonators together to form a network. Derailer uses finite-difference time-domain numerical modelling of these elements, as detailed in this technical paper.

Driver
Derailer uses a driver and resonator setup to provide a flexible system with a wide range of sounds. The excitation signal can be a sawtooth waveform, a plucked or bowed string, a pitched bar, or a striker. This thens passes through an EQ section and low-pass resonant filter, a diode clipper, and then a delay or gate. The resulting signal is then used to drive one of the bars of the resonator network. Resonator
The resonator is built from 5 metal bars which can be connected together by up to 10 nonlinear springs. The spring positions can be moved around to change the resonance of the network. Preparation is a MPE Physical Modeling Synthesizer plugin that addresses the tonal relationship between strings and collisions.

Preparation is a software instrument combining eight-voice polyphony and physical modelling synthesis. The so-called “next-generation collision modelling” plug-in is based on the modelling of two fundamental elements; strings – which can be configured as bars – and a rattling element.

Each voice has a pair of strings connected by a rattle that reacts to the vibrations at each end, and with controls for the mass at each end, the gap from the strings, the stiffness, edginess, strength and its position can generate anything from ominous and grating scrapes to rich and resonant strums. Preparation also hosts an inbuilt low shelf EQ, overdrive and reverb.

Preparation is based on next-generation modelling of collisions between the strings and the rattle element. Accurate modelling of collisions using a direct numerical method is computationally expensive to perform. Using our advanced non-iterative solvers we can compute the acoustic system for eight-voice polyphony in real-time, with the minimum amount of CPU usage.

Unreal instruments
Modus uses our latest research in collision modelling to connect acoustic elements together. Strings, plates, springs and rattles collide, literally, in algorithmic air to generate tones that resonate and react just like they would outside the virtual realm. These elements are combined in different ways to create three types of instruments.

Connected Strings
Each voice has up to four connected strings which can be plucked or act as resonators. The strings are connected by either rattles that give collision effects as the strings vibrate, or nonlinear springs. Physical parameters control the decay, mass and harmonic content along with individual semitone and fine tuning controls.

Strings connected to a Plate
This model has two strings connected to a plate using nonlinear connections that can either be rattles or springs. These strings are retuned on-the-fly to give 6 octaves of monophonic or duophonic sound. The plate can act as a soundboard by varying its decay, mass and fundamental frequency. These, along with the connection controls, can all be changed in real-time.

Driven Plates
A driver signal is used to excite the top plate, which is connected to the bottom plate with two nonlinear connections. This driver can be a polyphonic sawtooth or sine wave, or a multi-striking hit for percussive effects. There is also an option to use a single plate connected to ground.

Real physics with complete control
Every element in Modus’ true-to-life physical modelling engine reacts like it belongs to a real action in a real space. Where you hit the strings and plates matters, as do the position of the connections. Our next-generation collision modelling creates a huge spectrum of nonlinear behaviour, from subtle pitch glides to high energy crescendos. Tetrad is a hybrid instrument based on physical modelling and granular synthesis. A unique quad bus signal chain feeds 4 modelled plates alongside a full modulation matrix, creating a soundscape that rewards experimentation.

Like No Other Synth
Tetrad is like no other synth you’ve ever used. Developed in collaboration with composer and transmedia artist Gadi Sassoon, the plugin takes four oscillators, routes them in combination through a Quad AM processor that works like a pseudo-sequencer, a specifically tailored Granulator, and four physically modelled plate resonators.

Inspired by Gadi’s sculpture-based synth installation, as heard on the album Modes of Vibration, Tetrad was originally devised as a complement to the slashed plates and sound generators of the experimental setup, but has grown into a plugin instrument that puts the capabilities of the installation into a single piece of software in a DAW.

How Tetrad Works
It starts with the oscillators, which give a choice of five modes, each with four oscillators per voice (hence the name Tetrad). In the Macro view, you can change the main oscillator waveshape, and apply frequency modulation. Oscillators can be tuned in various ways according to the chosen mode, from basic intervals to diatonic inversions. An ADSR provides initial amplitude shaping before heading down to the mixer. There is also a Sidechain audio option, bypassing the oscillators and allowing any signal to be used.

A 4×4 Matrix Mixer blends the four inputs onto four busses. Next is Quad Amplitude Modulation with Depth, Shape and Rate, which works well into the audio range, and Phase set individually per bus. In Tetrad’s Quad Granulator, the signal is split into grains that are replayed in different ways. You can affect the grains’ window shape, Size, Pitch, and change the Feedback of the granulator. Finally this feeds the Plates through a preamp with overdrive.

To Infinity: Modulation Matrix and MPE
Tetrad encourages you to think in a different way about creating sound, and its modulation matrix widens the scope even further. Here, you can route sources to ten destinations from a choice of over 45. Each routing has an amount to set its depth.

Sources include eight LFOs, MIDI values and MPE dimensions. Envelopes include the synth’s main ADSR as well as some envelope-following signals, which are derived from the AM and Granulator levels, making these sources self-modulatable. Each source has a visual indicator of its value to help understand its effects on the signal.

MPE Velocity, Slide, Pressure and Glide are available as modulation sources for the full MPE experience. In MPE mode, pitchbend and glide are available continuously across the full range of MIDI notes.

What is the MDS sound engine?
Multi-Dimensional Synthesis (MDS) is Korg’s proprietary sound engine system. In developing EP-1, we first meticulously sampled the tonal changes produced by electric pianos across a wide range of keystroke strengths, and selected from the finest individual electric pianos that offer excellent playability as the source instruments. By separating the pitch components and noise components such as hammer and key release and re-synthesizing them under separate control, we were able to recreate all the tonal changes of electric pianos. As a result, we achieved a sound engine system that reacts extremely naturally to player control, with sound editing performance, touch sensitivity, and temporal changes in sound that could not be expressed with normal sample playback methods.

The smooth tonal changes from soft to intense touch are naturally free of the noticeable boundaries typical of velocity switching. Temporal changes such as decay and release also achieve a natural feeling, different from those produced by envelope generators.

From the ’60s to today, electric piano sounds have been an essential part of many musical styles and genres.
