On average it takes about 10 hours to complete the campaign with a single class, but maxing out a character and mastering all of the higher Freeplay difficulty levels and Quests takes much longer. WHY SERUM? The dream synthesizer did not seem to exist: a wavetable synthesizer with a truly high-quality sound, visual and creative workflow-oriented interface to make creating and altering sounds fun instead of tedious, and the ability to “go deep” when desired – to create / import / edit / morph wavetables, and manipulate these on playback in real-time. Serum has a Wavetable editor built right in- you can create your own wavetables in a variety of ways. Import audio directly from audio files – Serum has a variety of methods and options for analyzing audio for breaking it apart into individual waveforms. You can import single-cycle wavetables of course, as well as many at once (with in-built sorting options, or manual re-ordering).

ULTRA-CLEAN OSCILLATORS
Playback of wavetables requires digital resampling to play different frequencies. Without considerable care and a whole lot of number crunching, this process will create audible artifacts. Artifacts mean that you are (perhaps unknowingly) crowding your mix with unwanted tones / frequencies. Many popular wavetable synthesizers are astonishingly bad at suppressing artifacts – even on a high-quality setting some create artifacts as high as -36 dB to -60 dB (level difference between fundamental on artifacts) which is well audible, and furthermore often dampening the highest wanted audible frequencies in the process, to try and suppress this unwanted sound. In Serum, the native-mode (default) playback of oscillators operates with an ultra high-precision resampling, yielding an astonishingly inaudible signal-to-noise (for instance, -150 dB on a sawtooth played at 1 Khz at 44100)! This requires a lot of calculations, so Serum’s oscillator playback has been aggressively optimized using SSE2 instructions to allow for this high-quality playback without taxing your CPU any more than the typical (decent quality) soft synth already does. Load up Serum and we think you’ll be able to notice both what you hear (solid high frequencies, extending flat all the way up to the limits of hearing) as well as what you don’t hear (no unwanted mud or aliasing gibberish- just good, clean sound).

MODULATION – WORK THE WAY YOU WANT TO
The modulation system allows for drag and drop connections between mod sources and destinations. Want an LFO controlling a filter cutoff? Simply drag the LFO title to the cutoff knob. This LFO->Filter connection will now appear in the Mod Matrix as well. In other words, you have two views/approaches for creating and modifying your modulations: sometimes a list is nice, other times you just want the job done fast and easy.

REALTIME WAVETABLE MANIPULATION
In addition to moving through the set of wavetables (up to 256 make up a single oscillator), you can manipulate the waveform itself in a separate realtime process referred to as Warp. This allows for FM/AM/RM/Oscillator Sync and many other ways to modify the waveform, including “Remap” modes – a graph editor for drawing your own custom table manipulations.

FILTER TYPES
Serum includes all of the filter types found in LFOTool in addition to some brand-new ones. Flangers, Phasers, and Comb filters all of which can key-track to the musical note you play. Dual filter types let you control or morph between filter types. Get creative with atypical processes for filters such as downsampling, or the unique filter types found nowhere before, such as the dirty-sounding French LPF.

BUILT-IN SUITE OF EFFECTS
An effects rack with 10 effects modules lets you get your sound all the way to the finish line inside Serum. Effects can be re-ordered to any configuration you want. Virtually all effect parameters are also available as modulation destinations. This is especially useful on monophonic synth sounds. For example, apply an LFO to control reverb size or dry/wet, or velocity to control distortion amount. Many of these effects and modes were built just for Serum, so there are many unique effects to choose from, such as Hyper, which simulates (additional) unison amounts, or a dual-waveshaper which allows for a distortion you can morph between two separate wave shapes.

ADVANCED UNISON
Serum will let you stack a single oscillator to use up to 16 voices. Each of the wavetable oscillators have a number of unison advanced parameters. Stack settings allow for note (e.g. octave) layering to get a fuller sound for a single note-press. Set the unison voices to all have their unique waveform at once with the Unison WT Pos setting, or have them all skewed in a different way with the unison Warp control. A variety of unison tuning modes per-oscillator let you get the stack sound blooming or swarming like you want.

Blue Cat’s PatchWork is a universal plug-ins patchbay that can host up to 64 VST, VST3, Audio Unit or built-in plug-ins into any Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) in one instance.

It is possible to chain effects in series or create up to 8 parallel chains that can be activated independently. This lets you create your favorite effects or instruments configurations within the plug-in, without the need for multiple busses. These configurations can be saved as presets and recalled instantly, or shared with multiple DAWs, using any plug-in format (full list below). Use the built-in audio effects to add color to your own plug-in chains.

Despite the name, you can forget about wires or cables: configuring plug-ins routing is as simple as adding or removing a row or a column in the rack’s matrix. All plug-ins can also communicate with each other or with the host application using the virtual MIDI ports offered by the plug-in.

For each plug-in slot, latency compensation, presets management, undo/redo integration, audio i/o selection and individual plug-in bypass are included for optimal operation. The plug-in also stores the position of the window for each plug-in so that the layout is restored with your session or saved with presets.

Also, sub plug-ins can be automated or controlled with external control surfaces using Blue Cat’s PatchWork parameters mapping capabilities.

It is virtually identical to Perfectly Clear Complete except in two ways.
It removes controls for all of the Beautify technology. These adjustments are helpful for portrait and wedding photographers, but not really useful to landscape and travel folks.
It removed the batch export module from Lightroom.

While both of the above are useful, they are designed for pros who need the most time-saving options for processing portraits. If you do need portrait adjustments, you can easily add the Kristina Sherk preset packs or a new forthcoming one from Matthew Jordan Smith.

You can also create your own presets and exchange your favorite settings with other users. This is a great deal if you want the time-saving features as well as advanced technology to unlock perfect exposure and sharper images.

Usher 2.0 is the ultimate tool for managing and watching your collection of videos. View your library in four view modes; watch movies in three ways. You can even use your Apple hardware remote to control playback and choose movies.

Tags and properties let you add metadata, and you can even download cast, director, etc. directly from Amazon.

The Bad News

  • Switched from QuickTime to AVFoundation (a.k.a. “QuickTime” X) for movie playback, because the real QuickTime, which Usher was built upon, will not work on macOS 10.15 Catalina. As a direct consequence of this, movie conversion and exporting, along with some movie editing functionality, have been removed, at least for now.
  • AVFoundation-based Usher also supports fewer file formats, if only because it can’t use plugins like Perian and Flip4Mac anymore, but read on for ways to ease the file format pain.
  • Removed auto-properties, which haven’t worked in quite some time anyway, because the underlying database went away.
  • Table columns will reset to the default once, because of an overdue internal change.

New Features

  • If Usher cannot open a file, it now falls back to opening it in the file’s assigned default app — i.e., the same app you’d end up with if you double-clicked the file in Finder. For each app, Usher requests your confirmation at least once, so you have a chance to correct weird default apps in Finder as you go.
  • You can now specify JSON default viewer rules in Usher’s Advanced preferences. Match URLs via regular expression or an “Extensions” value that consists of whitespace-separated filename extensions. Alternatively, you can still assign apps to individual files via context menu or Info dialog.
  • After opening a file in VLC, Usher can now monitor VLC and continue with the next file in a given Usher playlist once VLC playback of the first file has concluded. This is disabled by default, but for those who have VLC installed, there’s a checkbox in Usher’s General preferences.
  • By default, full screen mode now uses a separate Space, making it more similar to modern macOS’s standard full screen mode.
  • You can now check/uncheck tags and property values for a single file or multiple files directly from within the context menu. This is the most convenient thing ever.
  • Smart playlists that are subdivided by defined properties (or tag/property value subdivision’s new default, “all”) now automatically add a second subdivision step for each property’s respective values.
  • Smart playlists can now be subdivided by property values along the lines of “Cast + Director” (either as the only specified value, or in addition to others), resulting in a subdivision hierarchy that’s similar to subdividing by defined properties, but restricted to the “+”-separated properties. Yeah, subdivision is a geeky feature.
  • Smart playlists with active relative-date-based criteria (e.g., “date added is within the last 3 days”) now display +/- toolbar buttons that let you quickly change between days, weeks, months, and years for the date criteria, thereby giving you a convenient way to look a little further into the past, then switch back.
  • In addition to single-value matches, the Similar context submenu now lists files that match all values for a given tag/property. And if an item has multiple tags/properties, Similar lists other items that match all values for all of those tags/properties below the tag/property-specific submenus.
  • Choosing the parent menu item of a tag/property-specific submenu in Similar, or choosing Similar itself, now triggers a filter search that will reveal all similar files at that level, including the reference file.
  • Movie and image files can now be mirrored.
  • Usher can now play movies in reverse and/or at double speed. Option-click the fast forward/backward buttons or choose the corresponding menu items to switch between those playback modes.
  • You can now drag cover and preview images out of the Info dialog to export them.
  • Usher now supports dark mode.
