A native macOS app for batch-editing audio metadata so ripped vinyls, store downloads, and mixed FLAC or MP3 libraries end up with consistent artists, albums, and artwork.

Benjamin Jaeger’s Meta (Nightbirdsevolve) treats a multi-file selection as one workspace: change a field or cover in the sidebar and the edit applies across the selection without a separate Save step. The approach suits DJs, collectors, and podcasters who fix hundreds of tracks after a weekend of ripping or Bandcamp purchases. Specialized editors handle tricky fields such as BPM, ISO 8601 dates, and multiline lyrics or comments, while custom sidebar layouts let you switch between presets for classical, publishing, podcasts, and everyday albums.

Organization, Discogs, and library sync

Beyond field edits, Meta renames files from tag patterns, builds folder trees with slash-delimited templates, extracts tags from filenames or paths, and auto-numbers tracks after you drag them into order. Find & Replace supports plain text, words, and regular expressions with iterative or grouped replaces. Tag Finder queries Discogs for missing tags and album covers—filter by media type such as CD or vinyl, choose cover sizes (Normal, Large, XL), and apply results without leaving the app. Cover workflows also include drag-and-drop replacement plus batch scale, crop, and compress to keep embedded art small.

Supported formats include MP3, MP4/M4A/M4B/M4V, FLAC, Ogg/Opus/Speex, AIFF, WAV, and DSF/DSDIFF, writing ID3v1/v2, MP4 atoms, Vorbis comments, RIFF INFO, and APE as configured in preferences. ID3v2.4 with UTF-8 or UTF-16 is recommended for Cyrillic and other non-Latin scripts. Changes can sync with Apple Music, iTunes, or Doppler libraries so you do not re-import after each cleanup. The engine is TagLib; the App Store privacy label states that no data is collected.

The app also sits in Setapp. Requirements are macOS 10.13 or later on Apple Silicon and Intel, with seven language localizations and a small install footprint (about 7.4 MB on the store listing).

Version 2.4.0 (released as Meta v2.4 on July 14, 2026) reworks Tag Finder preferences and adds Discogs import for Composer and Featuring credits—useful when releases credit writers and guest artists separately from the main artist field. If you already rely on Discogs matching, this release fills gaps that often stayed blank after a bulk lookup.
