Hydra lets you easily create beautiful high-dynamic-range (HDR) images from a set of exposures, effectively capturing both dark and bright subjects to make it more natural or to enhance scene drama.

Very often, a single photo can’t represent the entire dynamic range of light in a scene due to the physical limitations of the sensor. The picture is either underexposed (too dark) or overexposed (too bright), or both at the same time. Hydra allows you to overcome this limitation by merging a number of photos with different exposure settings and to create a natural image that is much closer to what your eyes actually see. Alternatively, Hydra also lets you artistically push contrasts to increase drama and emotions in your pictures beyond reality.

Optimized for Metal

Hydra has been optimized for latest macOS enhancements and brings native Metal support for maximum performance. Hydra comes with a completely rewritten computation and display architecture that is optimized for Metal from the ground up. It provides a high-precision 128-bit per pixel internal format with extremely fast 60 FPS previewing at full resolution. This lets you change tone mapper settings in real-time, at full size, and with no delay which in turn gives you more creative power and control on the result.

Image Alignment & Ghost Removal

Because multiple photos are merged, input pictures typically need alignment to compensate for camera motion if no tripod is used. Also, moving subjects in the scene may create ghosting artefacts that must be handled. Hydra 4 provides an advanced alignment tool to interactively align images against the reference one by locating feature points. You can inspect alignment quality through various 1 to 1 image difference schemes (blue/red, overlay…) or even preview the whole merging result. Full automatic alignment is also provided for simple cases. For ghost handling, Hydra 4 lets you delineate regions where moving subjects occur, and then, for each of these region, define which images do contribute to the merged image. This makes it possible to create beautiful HDR images even for difficult conditions.

New Tone Mapper

Hydra 4 comes with a brand new tone mapper based on a new technique which is faster, more accurate, and gives more control for fine tuning the details. This new tone mapper allows real-time previewing on the full resolution image for the best possible user experience. All settings get instant feedback that corresponds to the actual output. 12 tone mapping presets are available in Hydra 4 from which you can start, and then fine-tune the result using Hydra’s manual mode.

Modern Features & User Experience

In addition to native Metal support, Hydra 4 also provides support for lots of modern OS and hardware features, such as accurate color processing that includes support for Deep & Wide Color of latest Mac displays (P3 Retina displays), integration with Photos app, multitouch trackpad navigation and a gorgeous Mac-native translucent user interface. A number of unique features are also provided for a complete HDR editing experience, such as a new comparison tool that lets you compare the result with individual input pictures, a flashing mode that shows under- or overexposed regions, and snapshots that let you quickly save multiple tone mapper configurations to later compare together. KeyCue has always been a handy tool for learning and remembering keyboard shortcuts. With a simple keystroke or click, KeyCue displays a table with all available keyboard shortcuts, system-wide hotkeys, as well as key combinations for triggering macros in Keyboard Maestro, QuicKeys and iKey.

A completely new action that can be assigned to a trigger is to show a collection of your frequently used URLs. FileExtractor is a powerful utility that will scan your selected files or folders and extract the individual files, text, and other data contained in them.

It is useful for extracting wanted files out of other files in a variety of circumstances. For example when you have a 3rd party file that you need the contents of which are otherwise inaccessible, or when you need to access the contents of your own files that are corrupt or otherwise hard to obtain.

Due to the fact that it uses state of the art algorithms to extract data from any kind of file (including decompressing some file types and UUDecoding any encoded data it comes across transparently and on-the-fly), it will often surprise you with the quantity, quality, and kind of data that you find it will extract from files. Additionally all text is saved an “Raw Text (plain)” which will give you access to all valid text data found anywhere scanned.

Another feature it has is that if you make a disk image using Disk Utility and scan that it will recover deleted files from that. This can be used with camera SD cards, spinning hard disks, and most other media types.

Some examples of interesting things to scan are:

  • PDF files to extract the text and images
  • Graphics images to extract the separate images contained in them (such as PSD files)
  • Scan disk images (with the .dmg extension) to recover the deleted files from them. If you make a .dmg file of a digital camera’s memory card (using Disk Utility) you can effectively recover deleted files from your camera that were deleted, or get files back after the card becomes corrupted.
  • Any large complex filetype. For example you will often find jpegs embedded in Photoshop documents.
  • Your browser caches. You will be able to view the files they contain this way.
  • Corrupted documents which you would like to salvage the contents of. FileExtractor will extract all raw text from any document kind and save it as “Raw Text (Plain)” in the folders that it displays.

The waveform graphic displays gives you real time audio signal monitoring, information about the audio signal and the beat rhythm. Each deck has 3 waveforms: a full song waveform and two zoomed-in waveforms. The vertical waveforms allow you to visually align the beats with ease.

* Find your tracks with ease (includes iTunes library integration)
There is a browser, a current-list and a side-list available for finding, organising, previewing and playing your tracks. You can instantly search for tracks and/or filter them by format (be it audio, video or karaoke). Color markers make it even easier to spot your favorite songs, because you can assign different colors to any tracks.

* Create and recall loops, set up cue-points
You can set up seamless loops instantly, by setting In and Out points. You can move the loop or make it shorter or longer on-the-fly. You can also send a loop to one of the 8 sampler slots. You can set/recall instant cue-points (which act like bookmarks into the song) and view them on the waveform.

* Scratch. Reverse. Brake. (works with videos too)
You are free to make real turntable effects by using the waveform displays, as well as the virtual jog-wheels, using MIDI controllers or even real turntables (using the improved timecoded-vinyl engine). You can achieve effects like disk spin effect, scratch, reverse, play, brake, mute, fine-tune cue-points and even ‘reverse spin and play’ effect.

* Powerful mixer (includes effects)
You can adjust the gain (amplification), equalizer (3 bands), apply and combine different effects (10 effects included), change the musical key, etc.

* Separate headphones output and song pre-listening
You can configure advanced audio routing using up to 8 inputs and outputs. You can use a microphone or turntables and CD players.

* Fullscreen video output to external monitors, projectors, TV
There are several video effects and transitions that you can apply per deck.

* Real-time beat-aware visualizations (shaders)

* Powerful karaoke features including singers rotation list, key pre-adjusting, filler (background) music player and many more

8 sample players that you can use to play loops or jingles. You can pre-listen, choose to loop or sync them, apply filters, change the tempo/speed, etc.
