Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is a remastered real-time strategy classic from World’s Edge and Xbox Game Studios. Version 1.0 on Mac marks the first native Apple Silicon release of the Definitive Edition, ported by Feral Interactive and launched on Steam on 28 May 2026.

What the game offers

You lead civilizations from the Dark Ages through the Imperial Age, balancing economy, technology, and military power. The Definitive Edition includes updated 4K visuals, a remastered soundtrack, new animations, and quality-of-life improvements built up since the 2019 Windows launch.

Single-player includes historical campaigns and skirmish against AI. Online multiplayer and cooperative campaigns are available on Mac, with matchmaking against other macOS players. The base Mac release bundles three expansions: Lords of the West, Dawn of the Dukes, and Dynasties of India, each adding civilizations and campaigns. Additional DLC (for example Return of Rome, Chronicles, and The Last Chieftains) is sold separately on supported stores.

Mac port specifics

This is an Apple Silicon–native build: Steam lists macOS 15.7 or later and an Apple M1 (or A18 Pro) chip or better. Intel Macs are not supported. Existing Steam owners of the Windows edition receive the macOS version at no extra cost on the same Steam library entry.

Version 1.0 (macOS launch)

Catalog label “1.0” refers to the initial macOS port release, not a separate PC patch number (PC updates use build IDs such as 170934). There is no dedicated “1.0 changelog” beyond launch feature parity with the Definitive Edition content set described above.

Licensing and distribution

Available on Steam and the Feral Store; a Mac App Store release is planned for later in 2026 per official announcements. Pricing varies by region (often around $35 on Steam). Requires a Microsoft/Xbox account acceptance for online features per store terms. Internet connection required for multiplayer.
