KORG ARP 2600 v1.1.6

The one and only ARP 2600. The iconic ARP 2600. It’s the one synth you can expect to see in every major studio. They demand astronomical prices on the second hand market. When KORG released the limited- edition ARP 2600 FS in 2020, they sold out immediately world-wide. Now, KORG is pleased to present the first truly accurate software re-creation of this essential synthesizer: the KORG Collection ARP 2600.

KORG’s proprietary CMT technology faithfully reproduces the distinctive waveforms and filters, the custom LFO and envelope shapes, the many subtle nonlinearities, even the behavior of the patch panel – unlike any other 2600 software instrument. Thanks to this obsessive attention to detail, you can open the original ARP 2600 Patch Book (available as a free PDF on KORG’s website), hook up each of the 100 patches on screen, and they will sound just like an authentic ARP 2600 – something that no other 2600 plug-in can do.

Bringing the 2600 into the modern age
Preserving the fantastic sound quality, incredible flexibility, and quirky attitude of the original was only the beginning. To truly honor the legacy of this legendary instrument, we asked ourselves: if ARP redesigned the 2600 today, what would it be like? In response we made many improvements, including adding a second filter, a drive section, new modulation sources, extensive MIDI control, a sophisticated sequencer, up to 16-voice polyphony, and much more – all while keeping the spirit of the original ARP 2600 design.

Beauty in the details
Our engineers spent considerable time understanding every detail of the original and modern schematics, poring over the original 2600 manuals, testing with oscilloscopes, and most importantly listening. The original AR and ADSR envelopes, for example, might seem simple – but it took a lot of time and tweaking to get them just right. The oscillator waveforms are correct, including the slight imperfections that add a unique brightness (especially for the triangle and sine). We modeled both of the original VCF modules, the 4012 and the 4072, with a switch to select between them. We included all of the many saturation points on the original hardware, with subtle distortions that bring life to the sound. Extensive anti-aliasing techniques spread throughout the different modules let us deliver truly premium audio quality. KORG’s Component Modeling Technology (CMT) includes variations between analog components, just as you’d find with multiple hardware 2600s, to deliver natural richness when playing polyphonically.

Outside the patch panel, there are 20-odd Trim Pots to select between behaviors of different 2600 vintages, dial in calibration details such as square wave width and triangle wave symmetry (just like the original hardware), and more.

Preserving and expanding the 2600 spirit
Even more than most vintage synths, the 2600 has a character all its own. To begin with, no two sections are alike; each has its own purpose (often more than one) and capabilities to match. Each of the three VCOs has different features. The two envelopes work very differently. There are many hidden quirks, such as different ranges for identical-looking control inputs, phase inversions, and unusual waveforms. It’s a carefully considered instrument, but it also feels like a collection of bespoke modules. The differences guide the eye, and also simply make it fun to play around with. There’s a constant sense of discovery, of “wow, I can make it do that, too!”

When adding all of the new capabilities, we were determined to preserve the spirit of the original instrument. So, we resisted the modern urge to unify and standardize. Each of the VCOs is still different. When we added an envelope and an LFO, we made sure that they were different from the originals, enabling new sounds instead of just “more.” When we added a second filter, we made it entirely different from the main VCF. Each new feature speaks with its own voice. All of the additions have sensible normalled connections, incorporating the new LFO, envelope, and sequencer.

We also kept all of the controls of the original instrument, and even with all of the additions, we preserved the basic layout. If you’re familiar with the old 2600, or KORG’s new 2600 FS and 2600 M, you’ll feel right at home – but with even more to play with.

KORG Software Modwave Native v1.3.6

Modwave Native Wavetable Synthesizer Synthesis powerhouse with distinctive wavetable timbres, Kaoss Physics, and Motion Sequencing 2.0. The modwave, released in 2021, builds on the DW legacy and transforms it into a modern monster synth, featuring incredibly deep wavetable oscillators, gorgeous filters, wildly flexible modulation, sophisticated pattern sequencing, and macro controls to deliver unique, powerful, and easily customizable sounds and phrases.

What’s a wavetable?
Wavetables are sets of single-cycle digital waveforms, arranged in a specific order. The wavetable’s “position” determines which waveform is played. Moving the position with an envelope, LFO, or other modulation source creates subtle or dramatic changes in timbre. Some wavetable systems switch abruptly from one waveform to another; others crossfade smoothly between them. The modwave can do either one.

Modifiers
Use over 30 Modifiers to alter the character of any wavetable at load time. For instance, isolate the odd or even harmonics, add weight through anti-aliased quantization or saturation, or revisit the gritty character of old-school wavetable synths with the Vintage 8 & 12 options.

Morph
The 13 Morph Types let you stretch, squeeze, reflect, and otherwise alter the wavetables in real-time, changing their timbre and—when modulated—creating additional motion in the sound. Sync creates classic swept-sync timbres, using only a single oscillator. Three special Morph Types—FM, AM, and Ring Mod—modulate Osc 2 with Osc 1, and the last two even apply to samples.

A/B Blend
Using the unique A/B mode, oscillators can blend any two wavetables with phase-synchronous precision—different from simply layering voices—opening up a dimension of intermediate waveforms. Add body to otherwise “thin” waveforms, for instance, or a touch of sizzle to a mellow timbre. Even fade between two different “modifier” versions of the same wavetable. A/B Blend can be modulated in real-time, of course.

Gigabytes of samples
Wavetables also sound great when layered with samples, and the modwave oscillators handle that with aplomb, using KORG’s proprietary anti-aliasing sample playback technology. Totaling in the gigabytes, the modwave’s sample library includes new material from KORG, Airwave, and Francis Preve, plus a bank from Plugin Guru and a selection from the Kronos and Krome libraries.

User Sample Banks let you add more Multisamples to the system. You can create your own Banks, or use Banks from third party sound developers. modwave native can load many User Sample Banks simultaneously. This is one area in which software has the edge, due to the large amount of storage and RAM available on your computer: the hardware modwave can load only one User Sample Bank at a time.

KORG Software VOX Super Continental v1.1.3

The legendary VOX Continental organ is faithfully recreated in software as the VOX Super Continental!

Originally conceived in the early 1960s as a more portable and affordable alternative to tonewheel organs, the VOX Continental’s distinctive sound – and its sharp red-and-black design – soon made it a staple of “British Invasion” bands. The Continental’s bright timbre and brash attitude fit perfectly with jangly guitars, and easily cut through the mix on stage and in the studio.

Production stopped around 1970, but a new generation of ska, garage, punk, and new wave bands adopted the instruments in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Weathered and worn through decades of use, and none-too-stable to begin with, the instruments tend to be charmingly out of tune. As the key contacts aged, each note started to sound slightly different. With this unique voice, a combination of electric tone and vintage character, the Vox Continental is a fixture of stage and studio – particularly in indie music.

The KORG Collection VOX Super Continental began as a careful re-creation of a number of Continental keyboards, including a beloved instrument personally owned by the primary software engineer, in order to get the best possible representation of the Super Continental sound performance. This analysis included such details as the behavior of hundreds of individual key contacts – and is the most accurate VOX Continental software instrument available anywhere!

Calibrated character
The VOX Continental’s oscillators are based on unstable germanium transistors. The octave-divider circuits mean that octaves are always pure, but all other intervals can be at least subtly out of tune (and often much more so). This produces a distinctive chorusing effect when playing chords, and gives melodies a touch of extra flavor.

Individual notes are made by combining overtones from the drawbars. Each key has up to five key contact wires, one for each drawbar. When each wire hits its drawbar bus, that overtone sounds (often along with a tiny burst of noise). The contacts are usually worn and misaligned after all these years, and so the wires hit the drawbar buses at slightly different times. This lends every note a unique character at note-on and note-off.

All of these imperfections are lovingly modeled, and Calibration controls let you dial in as much or as little of them as you like.

Refined user experience
Smooth Sound Transitions let previously-played voices and effects continue naturally when you change sounds. KORG’s sophisticated sound browser supports categories, text search, and more. On-screen help provides information and useful tips for every drawbar, knob, and switch.

Effects
The VOX Super Continental was almost always played through an amp, so of course we include a selection of amp and cabinet models, along with a stunningly detailed rotary speaker. There are two insert effects before the amp, another insert after it, and finally a dedicated reverb slot. For the inserts you can choose between 30 effects types, including everything from vintage pedals and tape delay to modern reverse delays and shimmer reverb.

Release Notes
v1.1.4 May 14 at 04:41
Improved workflow for initial installation of sound data; the user only needs to select a destination folder if installing to a non-default location.
Factory data is now downloaded to a temporary file on disk instead of into RAM. This should improve reliability for rare cases in which the user’s computer did not have sufficient free RAM for the download.
New modeling of Key Tracking nonlinearity. Hardware 2600s do not have perfect key-tracking for pitch and filter cutoff; this can add interesting dimensions to sounds, particularly for special effects. The new KeyTrk Nonlinearity Trim Pot adjusts nonlinearity for CVs 1 and 2, Osc 1-3, and filter cutoff. This is accompanied by a new Voice Variation control, Key Tracking, which adjusts the variation of nonlinearity between voices. Both controls default to 0, so that existing sounds are not affected.
MIDI Mapping is improved in several ways. Previously, inactive mappings (to un-selected effects or electric piano types, for instance) were hidden; now they are always displayed. The effect type is now included in the parameter name. MIDI Mapping for effects enable is now common to the effect slot, rather than being independent per effect type.
In the Librarian, if a Collection is selected and then all of its items are deleted or moved out of the Collection, the Collection name is now removed from the filters list.
When undoing an import action, the message now reads “Please wait…”
Automation of 2- and 3-way switches now plays back properly.
Previously, the Import and Export progress dialogs might not have closed properly. This has now been fixed.
Previously, if the user edited a Set List, closed the Set List window, and then used Undo, a crash could occur. This has now been fixed.
Previously, “Settings > Check now…” for new version resulted in a communication error in the effect version, ARP 2600 FX. This has now been fixed.
Previously, with specific Program parameter settings, changing Programs rapidly could cause a crash. This has now been fixed.
Windows only: Previously, when exporting data, the progress bar could remain stuck on the screen. This has now been fixed.
Windows only: previously, dialog boxes might have overlapped. This has now been fixed.

KORG Software EP-1 v1.0.5

MORiA | STANDALONE | AUi | VST3i

EP-1 Electric piano sound engine from the KORG KRONOS/NAUTILUS. The finest vintage EP sounds now available in the KORG Collection.

The electric piano sound engine EP-1 first appeared in 2011 in KORG’s flagship workstation synthesizer, KRONOS. It adopted the newly developed MDS (Multi-Dimensional Synthesis) technology which expresses smooth and dynamic tonal changes finely corresponding to key touch, something previous sample playback methods could not achieve. In 2017, it was featured in the top-tier Korg stage piano Grandstage, and in 2021, a new electric piano model was added to the NAUTILUS workstation. This plugin version now features the latest EP-1 sound engine and has received new voicing, making it the definitive Electric Piano sound engine.

The overwhelmingly realistic sound and dynamic expression of EP-1 will stir the player’s soul and unleash deep emotional responses. Experience the latest EP-1 sound engine and expand your creative horizons.

Discover the EP-1
EP-1 superbly reproduces the sound of seven classic tine-type, reed-type electric pianos, and vintage effects with high precision. Using KORG’s carefully developed Multi-Dimensional Synthesis (MDS) technology, EP-1 delivers natural and real-time expression, unattainable with traditional sample playback methods. From pianissimo to fortissimo, EP-1 provides smooth and natural dynamic changes without noticeable transitions, this is a true musical “instrument.” By controlling noise elements, such as mechanical key-off noise with release velocity in real-time, it enables unprecedented realistic and detailed performance.

What is the MDS sound engine?
Multi-Dimensional Synthesis (MDS) is Korg’s proprietary sound engine system. In developing EP-1, we first meticulously sampled the tonal changes produced by electric pianos across a wide range of keystroke strengths, and selected from the finest individual electric pianos that offer excellent playability as the source instruments. By separating the pitch components and noise components such as hammer and key release and re-synthesizing them under separate control, we were able to recreate all the tonal changes of electric pianos. As a result, we achieved a sound engine system that reacts extremely naturally to player control, with sound editing performance, touch sensitivity, and temporal changes in sound that could not be expressed with normal sample playback methods.

The smooth tonal changes from soft to intense touch are naturally free of the noticeable boundaries typical of velocity switching. Temporal changes such as decay and release also achieve a natural feeling, different from those produced by envelope generators.

Diverse Electric Piano Sounds
From the ’60s to today, electric piano sounds have been an essential part of many musical styles and genres. The EP-1 delivers an extensive array of sounds, from classic electric piano tones to aggressive plucked piano sounds through a guitar amp, and hammer sounds that emphasize the attack components of tines. With 50 reinterpreted electric piano sounds utilizing the MDS engine, the EP-1 will add vibrant new colors to your sonic palette.
