Output Portal 1.0.1

Output has released Portal, a granular effects plug-in. Portal invites you to run any input signal through its granular synthesis engine, taking “your sounds to another dimension”, as Output claims. The plug-in also features extensive modulation capabilities and additional effects.

Like other granular synthesizers and effects, such as Granulizer 2, PolyGAS, or Cosmosf FX4, Output Portal divides audio into small grains. These are then resynthesized to form the output signal, which can sound like a warped version of the original, or something completely different. Unlike many granular synthesizers, Portal does not require you to load a sample into the plug-in, but rather applies itself as an effect to the incoming audio signal.

Portal lets you adjust the grain with parameters like density, offset, size, count, and shape. You can control the pitch shifting of grains, which can lock to a selectable scale, if desired. The grain section, which is accessible on the advanced page, also features time stretching, tempo-syncing grain delay, and lowpass and highpass filters.

Control parameters with the X/Y pad

Parameters can be mapped to two macros, which you can then control with a large X/Y pad. The developers took the opportunity to integrate some cool graphics that really make you feel like you’re sending your sounds into another dimension.

For modulation, Output Portal includes two looping envelopes, which seem to be very flexible. You can edit them graphically, and it looks like they can take many shapes from simple curves to complex rhythmic patterns. The envelopes can control any parameter, allowing you to modulate all aspects of the granular synthesis.

Effects

To further shape the sound, Output Portal includes additional effects. There are two slots, into each of which you can load one of seven effects. Bit reducer, chorus, distortion, filter, phaser, reverb, and delay are on offer. In addition to that, Output also has a master effects section with a stereo compressor and master filters.

Airfoil Satellite

Airfoil for Mac 5.0 includes full compatibility with the new Airfoil Satellite applications, available for iOS, Mac and Windows. If you want to hear your Mac’s audio on another Mac, Windows machine, or iOS device, just run the free Airfoil Satellite there. Airfoil will see it and enable you to send audio to it! Speaker Groups

A group is a collection of multiple speakers which appears as one in Airfoil’s main window. Use a Group to send audio to multiple outputs with a single click. Silence Monitor

Great for workplace or shared home setups, the new silence monitor allows Airfoil to automatically disconnect itself when it’s streaming silence. The output device is then be freed up for others to use.

Custom Equalizer Presets

Adjust the equalizer to your liking, then save it in the Preset menu. Now you’ll be able to access those exact settings any time you like.

Hide Speakers

If you regularly connect to a shared network which contains devices you don’t control, you may wish to hide them entirely from Airfoil. Now you can do so, from the “Advanced Speaker Options” window.

Adjust Sync

Airfoil automatically keeps all outputs completely in sync. However, there may be rare situations where you wish to adjust this, such as when an output is connected to a receiver which adds its own latency. The new Sync sliders in the “Advanced Speaker Options” window make this possible.

Beautifully Refined Interface

Airfoil for Mac and Airfoil Satellite for Mac have both been improved, all without changing too much. The interface will still be familiar to users of older versions of Airfoil, but it also features many improvements. There are improvements like longer volume sliders in Airfoil’s main window, as well as beautiful new graphics that are fully updated for Retina displays. Meanwhile Airfoil Satellite has been updated to include the new controls for controlling Airfoil, while retaining all that the previous “Airfoil Speakers” application offered.

It’s now possible to clear Recent Applications from the Airfoil Source selector, which will make a small group of users happy.

Many other small improvements and fixes have been made.

  • Analog: Changes the frequency response of master suite to sound more Analog.

  • Stereo Image: The Mono control works by making the audio completely mono below the set frequency. This can help to tighten up the low end and ensure it is coming only from the center of the stereo field. The Stereo control enhances the stereo field for the frequencies only above the mid range, leaving the lower frequencies untouched. This can be used to add extra ‘space’ in the master by pushing instruments even wider in the stereo field.
  • Ceiling: Sets the maximum loudness for peaks. Your master will not go louder than this.

  • When you click on the time position in the HeadsUp Display to switch between bar/beat and time displays, the timeline now also updates to reflect the current position display mode
  • When searching for inversions (a.k.a. “slash chords”) such as D/A in the chord chooser, Capo now provides results that include all the inversions available in the chord once you type the “/
  • character
  • The progress meter that is displayed during the song analysis now updates more smoothly as the calculations are happening, and should better reflect the weight of the individual processing steps
Bug fixes:
  • Certain inversions (Dm/C, D/A) are no longer missing important/common shapes in the chord chooser
