Airfoil 5.8.6

Stream any audio from your Mac all around your network. Send music services like Spotify or web-based audio like Pandora wirelessly to all sorts of devices, including the Apple TV, Google Chromecast, and Bluetooth speakers. You can even send to iOS devices and other computers. Any audio on your Mac can now be heard throughout your house!

Bluetooth Devices

Airfoil now works with the thousands of different Bluetooth speakers, headphones, and headsets available. With Airfoil 5, you can stream a single application’s audio to a Bluetooth device (or even multiple Bluetooth devices!), and keep the rest of your audio on your Mac.

Airfoil Satellite

Airfoil for Mac 5.0 includes full compatibility with the new Airfoil Satellite applications, available for iOS, Mac and Windows. If you want to hear your Mac’s audio on another Mac, Windows machine, or iOS device, just run the free Airfoil Satellite there. Airfoil will see it and enable you to send audio to it! Airfoil Satellite also offers remote control of both supported source applications, as well as Airfoil itself. Now you can control playback, toggle outputs off and on, and much more, all remotely.

Speaker Groups

A group is a collection of multiple speakers which appears as one in Airfoil’s main window. Use a Group to send audio to multiple outputs with a single click. Create one group for all the speakers in your house, or divide your speakers into zones. Now you can send audio exactly where you want even faster.

Silence Monitor

Great for workplace or shared home setups, the new silence monitor allows Airfoil to automatically disconnect itself when it’s streaming silence. The output device is then be freed up for others to use.

Custom Equalizer Presets

Adjust the equalizer to your liking, then save it in the Preset menu. Now you’ll be able to access those exact settings any time you like.

Hide Speakers

If you regularly connect to a shared network which contains devices you don’t control, you may wish to hide them entirely from Airfoil. Now you can do so, from the “Advanced Speaker Options” window.

Adjust Sync

Airfoil automatically keeps all outputs completely in sync. However, there may be rare situations where you wish to adjust this, such as when an output is connected to a receiver which adds its own latency. The new Sync sliders in the “Advanced Speaker Options” window make this possible.

Beautifully Refined Interface

Airfoil for Mac and Airfoil Satellite for Mac have both been improved, all without changing too much. The interface will still be familiar to users of older versions of Airfoil, but it also features many improvements. There are improvements like longer volume sliders in Airfoil’s main window, as well as beautiful new graphics that are fully updated for Retina displays. Meanwhile Airfoil Satellite has been updated to include the new controls for controlling Airfoil, while retaining all that the previous “Airfoil Speakers” application offered.

It’s now possible to clear Recent Applications from the Airfoil Source selector, which will make a small group of users happy.

Many other small improvements and fixes have been made.

  • Airfoil’s Audio Capture Engine (ACE) backend has been updated to 10.1. This update includes several fixes and improvements, for the most stable audio capture possible.
  • It’s now easier to capture audio from the entire system (System Audio), Finder, and Text to Speech, with the new Special Sources section of the Source selector.
  • On MacOS 10.14 (Mojave), Airfoil now offers Dark Mode support throughout the app.
  • Smaller improvements and interface modifications have also been made to Airfoil’s Source selector, as well as the audio device icon.
  • Audio streaming to passwordprotected Shairport devices should now work as expected in all cases.
  • Airfoil now correctly handles multipacket RTSP messages, which should solve some longstanding “RTSP” errors for certain rare devices.
  • A bug where the main window could get stuck on a disconnected monitor has been corrected.
  • Airfoil’s Help menu now includes a useful new Release Notes window, so you can see changes across all versions from right inside the app.
  • The look of messages displayed by Airfoil has been modernized.
  • The About box has been updated to provide additional version information in an easytoread fashion.

  • Major Enhancement: SoundSource now offers support for Dark Mode on MacOS 10.14 (Mojave), with a new Dark theme, and a default “Match System” option. It’s also possible to specify which theme is used, independent of the system.
  • Major Enhancement: It’s now easy to adjust audio from the Finder, as well as the OS’s “Text to Speech” functionality. Just select these sources from the new “Special Sources” section found in the updated “Add App” Source selector, and you’ll be able to control and adjust the audio.
  • Major Enhancement: SoundSource now offers full Undo support, enabling you to easily revert changes you’ve made within the app.
  • Major Enhancement: SoundSource’s backend, Audio Capture Engine (ACE), has been updated to 10.1. This update includes several fixes and improvements, for the most stable audio capture possible.
  • Critical Bug Fix: Several issues which could cause SoundSource to pinwheel or crash have been fixed. These issues were fortunately quite rare, but also difficult to track down. If you previously experienced anything along these lines, please be sure to update to the latest SoundSource. If any similar problems persist, please let us know!
  • Critical Bug Fix: An issue where SoundSource’s backend could lock up due to rapid sample rate changes has been fixed.
  • Critical Bug Fix: Redirecting audio to Bluetooth devices should now be vastly more reliable (as reliable as Bluetooth can be, anyhow).
  • Enhancement: Sources which have any audio effects applied to them will now be marked with a small “FX” badge.
  • Enhancement: When the mouse pointer is over a slider, it is now possible to swipe or scroll to adjust it.
  • Enhancement: SoundSource’s main window now visibly dims when it’s in the background, for better clarity.
  • Enhancement: SoundSource now attempts to track USB audio devices across ports. If a device is unplugged from one port and plugged in to a different port, it is now more likely to continue working as desired.
  • Enhancement: SoundSource now offers a helpful secondary menu when rightclicking its menu bar icon.
  • Enhancement: Applications can now be added to SoundSource’s list by dragging them into the window. If SoundSource is not currently visible, dragging to the menu bar icon will make the main window appear, and the application can be dropped into the list.
  • Enhancement: SoundSource will now show a warning if a combination of Audio Unit effects will cause 100 ms of latency or more, as this will lead to an audible delay in hearing audio.
  • Enhancement: The “Add App” Source selector has been updated, with interface improvements and other modifications.
  • Enhancement: The behavior of the mute control for Sound Effects has been updated to avoid user confusion.
  • Enhancement: A small number of poorperforming Audio Units are now blocked by default in SoundSource. For more details, please see this support article.
  • Enhancement: SoundSource now remembers up to the last 20 devices, rather than an unlimited (bottleneckinducing) amount.
  • Enhancement: Plugin windows can now be closed with CmdW.
  • Enhancement: Window management and positioning has been improved in several ways. Plugin windows are now smarter about where they appear, and will move as necessary if SoundSource’s main window is moved. As well, if SoundSource’s app icon is not visible, and its hotkey is pressed, SoundSource now appears in a more logical location.
  • Bug Fix: A launching crash which would occur when an inuse Audio Unit plugin was removed from the system has been fixed.
  • Bug Fix: When multiple devices with identical names are present, device changes are now better handled.
  • Bug Fix: SoundSource should now behave better on setups with multiple screens and/or multiple spaces.
  • Bug Fix: A glitch in audio that would occur when audio streams came and went has been fixed. This prevents an undesired issue where Magic Boost could behave in unexpected ways.
  • Bug Fix: Scanning for Bluetooth devices has now been greatly improved, fixing a problem where opening a device selector could cause a CPU spike.
  • Bug Fix: SoundSource’s menus and windows now behave better when using your Mac in fullscreen mode and when switching between spaces.
  • Bug Fix: An audio dropout which could occur when a large number of plugins were present has been fixed.
  • Other: A cosmetic issue where a highlight on various controls could lag has been fixed.
  • Other: Another cosmetic issue where slider knobs could incorrectly lose their shadows has been fixed.

Bluetooth Devices

Airfoil now works with the thousands of different Bluetooth speakers, headphones, and headsets available. With Airfoil 5, you can stream a single application’s audio to a Bluetooth device (or even multiple Bluetooth devices!), and keep the rest of your audio on your Mac.

Airfoil Satellite

Airfoil for Mac 5.0 includes full compatibility with the new Airfoil Satellite applications, available for iOS, Mac and Windows. If you want to hear your Mac’s audio on another Mac, Windows machine, or iOS device, just run the free Airfoil Satellite there. Airfoil will see it and enable you to send audio to it! Airfoil Satellite also offers remote control of both supported source applications, as well as Airfoil itself. Now you can control playback, toggle outputs off and on, and much more, all remotely.

Speaker Groups

A group is a collection of multiple speakers which appears as one in Airfoil’s main window. Use a Group to send audio to multiple outputs with a single click. Create one group for all the speakers in your house, or divide your speakers into zones. Now you can send audio exactly where you want even faster.

Silence Monitor

Great for workplace or shared home setups, the new silence monitor allows Airfoil to automatically disconnect itself when it’s streaming silence. The output device is then be freed up for others to use.

Custom Equalizer Presets

Adjust the equalizer to your liking, then save it in the Preset menu. Now you’ll be able to access those exact settings any time you like.

Hide Speakers

If you regularly connect to a shared network which contains devices you don’t control, you may wish to hide them entirely from Airfoil. Now you can do so, from the “Advanced Speaker Options” window.

Adjust Sync

Airfoil automatically keeps all outputs completely in sync. However, there may be rare situations where you wish to adjust this, such as when an output is connected to a receiver which adds its own latency. The new Sync sliders in the “Advanced Speaker Options” window make this possible.

Beautifully Refined Interface

Airfoil for Mac and Airfoil Satellite for Mac have both been improved, all without changing too much. The interface will still be familiar to users of older versions of Airfoil, but it also features many improvements. There are improvements like longer volume sliders in Airfoil’s main window, as well as beautiful new graphics that are fully updated for Retina displays. Meanwhile Airfoil Satellite has been updated to include the new controls for controlling Airfoil, while retaining all that the previous “Airfoil Speakers” application offered.

It’s now possible to clear Recent Applications from the Airfoil Source selector, which will make a small group of users happy.

Many other small improvements and fixes have been made.

What’s New in Airfoil 5.8.2

  • Major Enhancement: Airfoil now supports streaming audio to AirPort Express units running the new 7.8 (AirPlay 2) firmware.
  • Enhancement: The organization of groups in the Source selectors in Airfoil and Airfoil Satellite has been improved.
  • Enhancement: While we hope you never see them, several error messages in Airfoil have been improved.
  • Bug Fix: Chromecast devices will now correctly reappear when hidden and then unhidden. Note that the volume settings for any Chromecast devices may require a onetime adjustment.
  • Other: Airfoil now has preliminary compatibility with MacOS 10.14 (Mojave). We recommend users stick with a fully supported version of MacOS for now.
