Parallels Desktop is one of the oldest and most popular applications for virtualization on macOS. There are quite a few options out there for Mac users who want to run other operating systems on their Apple devices, but none are quite as intuitive and novice-friendly as Parallels.

This app allows you to Run Windows, various flavors of Linux, ChromeOS, Android, and many other operating systems in virtual machines, and it makes setting up and configuring these VMs incredibly straightforward. Much of the process is automated, and the virtualized OSes integrate well with macOS.

It really is that simple. Compared to alternatives like VirtualBox or VMware, it is much easier to create a virtual machine and install an OS. For instance, if you want a Windows 11 VM, the startup wizard guides you through the entire process. It only takes a few clicks and absolutely no technical knowledge.

If you skip the initial Win10 wizard, Parallels still has an installation assistant that can help you set up Windows, Linux, and many other operating systems. The Windows 10 Test and Development environments are available for free, as are numerous Linux flavors and Android, and you can even install macOS from the recovery partition or convert a Boot Camp installation to a VM.

Aside from installing Windows via Boot Camp, which isn’t likely to be supported on Apple Silicon, Parallels offers possibly the most seamless experience when running another operating system on your Mac.

MacBook Pro users can add Windows apps to the Touch Bar, Office integration lets documents in Safari open in their native Windows apps, and full support is available for Retina displays for the best visual experience.

Sharing files between your Mac and Windows VM could not be easier, as files on the desktop are instantly accessible from either OS, no matter where they were created.

If you want to take things one step further, just enable Coherence Mode. Once it is active, all applications in your Windows VM will appear in separate windows directly on your Mac’s desktop, almost as if they were running natively on macOS.

Of course, Parallels Desktop is available in multiple editions, with the Pro and Business variants geared towards professionals and enterprises respectively. While the Standard edition includes most features, it limits the amount of RAM and virtual CPUs you can use for each VM and lacks some advanced deployment and management tools.

These include integration with Docker, Vagrant, and Microsoft Visual Studio, among others, VM transferring and deployment capabilities, debugging tools, and centralized administration and management.

Whether you’re just starting out or you have a lot of experience with running VMs, nothing can beat the streamlined experience you get with Parallels, and it doesn’t lose out to its competitors when it comes to the number of available features either.

With Boot Camp seemingly doomed on Apple Silicon, Parallels will likely be one of the few virtualization options available for M1 Mac users.

According to the statistics from the users who participate in the Parallels Customer Experience program, some product features are used very seldom or not at all. We have decided to either stop supporting them or completely remove them from Parallels Desktop and focus on frequently used features and further enhancements.

Below is the list of features that are no longer supported and have been removed in Parallels Desktop for Mac 26:

• Installing Parallels Desktop on Macs running macOS Monterey 12.
• Shared Bluetooth functionality. Bluetooth devices (e.g., keyboards, mice, or game controllers) connected to your Mac will continue to work normally in virtual machines.
  Note: To connect a Bluetooth device directly to a virtual machine, consider using a USB Bluetooth dongle.
• USB and network kexts (kernel extensions). This deprecation affects virtual machines that run on Intel Macs using Parallels hypervisor; such machines will continue supporting USB and network adapters in kextless mode.
• Deferred activation.
• Designating a custom update server in the deployment package settings.

Consistent user experience
Adobe Bridge now has an enhanced user interface to provide you a similar experience like other Creative Cloud applications. You can also change the default user interface appearance, text size, and scaling by setting the User Interface preferences in the Edit > Preferences > Interface dialog.

Centralized cache management
You can now share a cache with other Bridge users and let them use the shared cache instead of creating a cache. Any Adobe Bridge user can export a cache to a shared folder, and other users can import a copy of the shared cache to their local systems. Given that the systems are in synchronization, managing the cache at a centralized location lets you reuse the exported cache, without the need to rebuild the cache on different user machines. You can create and manage the shared cache by using the Manage Cache dialog (Tools > Manage Cache), which has now been enhanced to provide options for building, importing, and purging cache. In addition, the cache preferences have been enhanced (Edit > Preferences > Cache and Edit > Preferences > Cache Management).

Edit capture time
Adobe Bridge now lets you change the capture time of the JPEG and RAW image files, just like the way it is done in Adobe Lightroom. This feature is helpful if you travel to a different time zone and do not change the date or time setting of your camera before you start photographing. With this feature, you can edit the capture time after capturing the image.

Support for XD file formats
Bridge now supports preview, thumbnail generation, metadata tagging, and keyword generation for Adobe XD files.

Media cache preferences
Bridge now processes and maintains a cache of all audio and video playback files. This capability improves the performance of playback files because the files are available for ready access whenever you want to view them later. It is recommended that you regularly clean the old and unused media cache files to optimize the performance. The preferences for media cache can be set by choosing Edit > Preferences > Media Cache.

BUG FIXES
General
* At sample rate 44.1 kHz, the plug-ins (not the standalone) now always have and report 16 samples added latency, to prevent potential latency changes during playback. Related to this, in some hosts (for example Ableton Live), looping would in version 3.1.0 cause an audio glitch.
* Using Program Change to select a user preset could cause graphical glitches or a crash if the preset used an EZX other than the current.
* On Windows, the tab key did not work as expected in external windows (detached views).
* Projects containing unmapped notes should no longer grow every time they are saved.

Song Track
* Deleting a MIDI block using a keyboard shortcut while the mouse was over one of the notes in the Grid Editor would cause a crash.
* Using Edit Play Style or undoing various actions could cause notes ending exactly at the end of a MIDI block to disappear.
* “Paste on Selected Groove” with a certain kit piece (not “All”) did not work correctly on merged or resized MIDI blocks – it could move the other existing notes (that were not replaced by the paste) and resize the blocks.
* “Paste on Selected Groove” did not retain notes hidden outside the edges (of a MIDI block that had earlier been resized to be smaller).
* “Paste on Selected Groove” in the MIDI block right-click menu would incorrectly show a keyboard shortcut (the one for “Paste at Playhead”).
* “Select Containing Folder in Grooves” should now work in more cases in older projects (instead of it opening a folder in Finder/Explorer).
* MIDI blocks created by drag-repeating a block would not respond to Solo/Mute of instruments in the Grid Editor.
* While Edit Play Style was open, moving a MIDI block onto another so that the latter was entirely removed could cause a crash.

Grooves Tab
* Dragging a Groove Part of a MIDI file to a song track block would in some cases incorrectly add an opening hit to the block.

Grid Editor
* Choke events are no longer shown for instruments that do not support them. Previously, expanding such an instrument (to show the articulation rows) with choke events existing for it on the track would cause a crash.
* Changing libraries would always graphically move the playhead in the Grid Editor to the beginning of the track.
* The Pencil Tool mouse cursor no longer shows a minus when it is below the last instrument row in the grid.
* In the Channel AT editor with Pencil Tool selected, the mouse cursor over an existing block now shows a minus instead of a plus, since clicking the block will delete it.

Mixer
* The Mixer would not show all buses in the default preset when certain libraries were loaded, for example Signature – Part 2 EZX.
* Toggling Solo on a channel in the mixer would clear the “Recall Mute” state, and toggling Mute would clear the “Recall Solo” state.

BetterZip can open and extract archives with the most common formats: ZIP, SIT, TAR, XAR, XZ, GZip, BZip2, RAR, 7-Zip, CPIO, ARJ, LZH/LHA, JAR, WAR, CAB, ISO, CHM, RPM, DEB, NSIS, BIN, HQX, DMG, EPUB, and Winmail.dat.
• Create Archives: Simply drag files and folders from your hard drives, disks, or network places into your new zip file. You no longer have to copy all the files into a temporary folder first. The supported formats are ZIP, TAR, GZip and BZip2 compressed TAR, XAR, 7-ZIP, and RAR (using the external RAR commandline tool). Large archives can also be split.
• Protect Your dаta: BetterZip can protect your data with a password and create AES-256 encrypted archives. 7-zip and rar archives can also be protected.
• Update Archives: Add new or updated files to existing archives. Remove any file or folder from an archive, or even move files around inside the archive as if it were a normal folder.
• Make Archives Compatible: Strip Mac-specific files and resource forks from archives for best compatibility with systems like Windows or Linux.

Even Better Integration with macOS

• App (Share) Extension to compress files from inside other apps.
• Share from BetterZip to other apps and cloud services.
• BetterZip submenu in Finder’s contextual menu. This is fantastic: Instead of manually adding each preset to the macOS Services menu (which you still can), you can now access all your presets conveniently from a BetterZip submenu of Finder’s contextual menu.
• Drag and Drop modernized: Drag items from an archive directly to other apps, e.g., Transmit. And when you drag items to the Desktop or Finder windows with icon view, the items will (finally!) be placed where you dropped them.

Places

• BetterZip 5 lets you manage your favorite folders and use them as quick extraction targets and as destinations to move your archives to with one button click. Yes, BetterZip now has a “Move archive” command and toolbar button that lets you move the archive to another folder or to the trash.

More Powerful Delete Commands

• Redesigned “Delete with pattern”: Firstly, BetterZip 5 lets you invoke your favorite patterns from the toolbar or menu. Secondly, you can now review which files are going to be deleted and tweak the list before actually deleting anything.
• BetterZip 5 lets you delete all Mac specific files from an archive with a toolbar button click or menu command. And you can purge all empty folders from your archive.

Additional Preset Options

• Instead of only customizing the filename extension in save presets, you can now specify a pattern to automatically generate filenames using fixed text and variables (like date, time, and username).
• The post-processing script in presets can now be an AppleScript script or even an Automator workflow in addition to shell scripts.
• Upon popular demand, save presets now let you move the original files and folders to the trash or any other folder after successful compression. (Limited to direct mode and queued operation.)

Many More New Features and Enhancements

• Added “Test”, “Open in BetterZip window”, and “Add to archive” to BetterZip button in Finder.
• BetterZip can now keep the external rar commandline utility up-to-date and automatically download and install new versions when they are available.
• Added an option to always or never update edited files inside the archive. While at it, I enhanced the updating of edited archive files in general (fewer alerts, keeping track of open files after saving changes back to an archive).
• For added security, BetterZip will now quarantine apps extracted from archives. You can disable this in the preferences.
• The “Replace File” dialog no longer blocks all other operations and you can now quick-look the two files for a last visual check.
• Better handling of Windows zip archives with non-latin character sets.
• Change the encoding of open archives without reopening them.
• BetterZip will now ask for the correct encoding, when it cannot be determined automatically.
• The info pane in the preview sidebar now shows more details. When no files are selected, general archive information is displayed.
• Better visibility when errors occur during queued operations, even if you choose to ignore the errors and continue. And the Reveal button in the queue window will open the transcript window in this case.
• Favorites sidebar: Added options to not show archive count badges and to disable file browsing, for users who use it as quick and simple extraction drop target only.
• Enhanced the logic of opening file packages (most importantly apps) with a double click. BetterZip will now only navigate into the package, if the option “File packages are expandable” in the View menu is toggled on. Otherwise it will either extract and open the package or do whatever you specified in Preferences > Files. Holding down the cmd key will toggle the behavior temporarily.
• When previewing an app in an archive, its icon, version, and copyright string are extracted and displayed.
• BetterZip now lets you save all the settings in the save panel as a preset. Use the new gear button for this. Loading presets has been moved to this button as well.
• When quitting BetterZip while archive operations are running, you are asked whether you really want to quit. This warning can be suppressed.
• Password panels allow you to show the entered password, even when not using the password manager.
• Added a command to completely reset the password manager in case you forgot the master password.
• When you load a preset in the save panel that has a password set, you can now use that password or clear it to enter a new one. You also get the chance to set a new password when doing a “save as…” command with an encrypted archive.
• More accurate progress bars for all operations.
• Added a tab for the configuration of default settings for the BetterZip Quick Look Generator in the preferences window. macOS Catalina rendered all other means of remembering settings for QL generators defunct. The QL generator is still free for all (i.e., no BetterZip license required) and free users can also use the app to set default settings without problems.
