What’s New:

Version 1.7.1
Pixelmator Pro 1.7.1 brings a few smaller improvements and a number of fixes for issues with text layers.
Text glyph variants were not working. Fixed.

  • If a text layer is hidden or locked while the text in it is being edited, text editing mode will now be exited automatically.
  • Automatically resizable path text layers on open paths would stop expanding once one edge of the path was reached. Now, the text box will also expand to the opposite edge.
  • After changing the size of an image, the zoom level will no longer be automatically adjusted to keep the image the same visible size on the screen.
  • The layer handles of locked path text layers were incorrect. Fixed.
  • The layer outline of text layers would not update if the macOS accent color was changed while Pixelmator Pro was open. Fixed.
  • The layer outline of empty text layers would not be displayed correctly when editing them. Fixed.
  • Path text layers that automatically resize would not be correctly flipped along paths. Fixed.
  • Flipped path text layers on closed paths would not be displayed correctly. Fixed.
  • In certain cases, the highlighting that shows text is selected would not be visible. Fixed.
  • Ligatures will no longer be used in path text layers as this can make text appear to be displayed incorrectly.
  • If two text layers were overlapping and the lower layer was selected, clicking to select the upper layer would cause the text of the lower layer to start being edited. Now, the upper layer will be selected.
  • When using drag and drop to insert text or emoji into a path text layer and dropping it into empty areas at the beginning or the end of the path text box, it would be inserted incorrectly. Fixed.
  • Using the Option-scroll gesture to zoom would not always work when using a Magic Mouse. Fixed.
  • In certain cases, undoing changes made using Trim Canvas would cause parts of the image to disappear. Fixed.
  • In rare cases, creating a path text layer would cause Pixelmator Pro to quit unexpectedly. Fixed.

Improvements and Fixes

  • With any shape tool selected, shapes will now always be drawn immediately, even on top of other existing shapes to make it easier to create illustrations.
  • To temporarily select or move shapes while using any shape tool, you can now press and hold the Command key.
  • If you Control-click the points of a shape, you’ll now be able to divide and join individual paths.
  • When using the Arrange tool or one of the shape tools and having a shape layer selected, pressing the Enter key will start editing the shape.
  • When opening large Pixelmator Pro documents, a thumbnail of the image will now be displayed in the progress dialog.
  • ML Denoise and ML Super Resolution will now use up to 10 times less memory.
  • Locked layers will no longer be automatically selected on the canvas.
  • Stroke performance has been significantly improved and layer strokes are now at least 10x faster.

  • You can now insert a new image layer from your Mac using the Option-Shift-Command-N keyboard shortcut.
  • When saving changes directly to JPEG, PNG, and TIFF images, Overwrite will now be the default option.
  • After changing the style of line shapes, it will now be remembered for future line shapes you draw, just like regular shapes.
  • Empty layers will have ‘—’ as their size, position, and angle.
  • The blending mode and opacity of locked layers would not be displayed correctly. Fixed.
  • Certain effects (such as Perspective Transform) would not be converted into pixels correctly. Fixed.
  • Cutting part of a layer and undoing the changes would sometimes cause graphical glitches. Fixed.
  • Processing a large number of files using the Pixelmator Pro actions in Automator would sometimes increase memory usage more than necessary. Fixed.
  • When copying and pasting between documents, some layers would not be placed correctly and it would sometimes cause blurring. Fixed.
  • When exporting to PSD, layer masks would not be preserved. Fixed.
  • When exporting to PSD, hidden layers would be saved without any content. Fixed.
  • Changing the size of a brush in the internal settings of a brush preset could cause Pixelmator Pro to quit unexpectedly. Fixed.

What’s New in Pixelmator 3.8.6

Pixelmator 3.8.6 brings a number of important fixes for a few subtle yet pesky (and deep-rooted) technical issues related to color handling in Pixelmator and includes a rebuilt, more reliable photo browser.

  • The photo browser has been rebuilt from the ground up using Apple’s MediaLibrary framework. This ensures a smoother and more stable photo browsing experience.
  • Fixed a range of color management-related issues including color shifts, use of incorrect color spaces, slight shifts in color values in the Colors palette, and more.
  • Colors in the Touch Bar are now synced to use the document’s color space.
  • If a document is saved after changing its color space, the QuickLook preview and document thumbnails would have an incorrect color space. Fixed.
  • The document would show incorrect colors if the screen color space was changed while the document was open. Fixed.
  • Changing the color space for a document with grouped layers would shift the layer colors. Fixed.
  • The colors of text and shape layers would shift after changing the document color space. Fixed.
  • When exporting images using Export for Web, the background color would have an incorrect color space. Fixed.
  • The RGB value of a color selected in the Colors palette would shift when switching between the Brush, Pencil, Pixel, and Paint Bucket tools, or between sessions. Fixed.
  • Colors window color space handling improvements:
  • Colors in Colors window will now work strictly in the document’s color space (disabled the ability to change the color space for the Colors Sliders and Color Wheel pickers).
  • Colors in the Gradients palette will work correctly in any color space.
  • If a PXD document with grouped layers is exported from Pixelmator Pro as a PSD file, opening that PSD in Pixelmator would result in flattening everything to just one layer. Fixed.
  • Pixelmator would sometimes quit unexpectedly when opening or closing windows. Fixed.

Pixelmator 3.8.5 brings a few more improvements and fixes.

  • The palettes will now be shown only when a document window has focus and be hidden in almost all other cases.
  • The palettes and windows would occasionally flicker. Fixed.
  • When restoring documents or opening Pixelmator by dropping images onto the app icon in the Dock, the Welcome window would be displayed when it shouldn’t. Fixed.
  • It was possible to open multiple Open dialogs. Fixed.
  • It was possible to open both the Welcome window and the Open dialog. Fixed.
  • Clicking certain areas of the Open dialog would not bring it in front of other windows. Fixed.
  • The palettes would appear together with the Open dialog after choosing to open an existing image in the Welcome window. Fixed.

  • The Spotlight effect was not working correctly. Fixed.
  • Adding guides would result in memory not being released after closing documents. Fixed.
  • Saving documents manually or automatically with iCloud enabled would result in memory not being released after closing documents. Fixed.
  • Using the Copy and Paste commands within Pixelmator would result in memory not being released after closing documents. Fixed.

Pixelmator Pro 1.3.2 includes a fix for an issue that caused the Photo Browser to be empty when using a newly installed version of Pixelmator Pro on macOS Mojave . Here’s what we added in the last Pixelmator Pro update:

New Features
  • Thanks to Portrait Mask support, Pixelmator Pro will now open photos taken in Portrait mode on iOS 12 together with a layer mask.
  • Pixelmator Pro will now always use tabs by default and remember your window size and position for all new documents.
  • Use the new Comics effect to quickly apply a comic bookstyle to any image — you can find this effect in the Stylize category.
  • A number of new keyboard shortcuts make it easier to select, organize, and duplicate layers.
  • Press the Slash (/) key to quickly lock and unlock layers.
  • OptionLeft bracket ([) and OptionRight bracket (]) let you select one layer up and down.
  • OptionComma (,) and OptionPeriod (.) let you select the top and bottom layer.
  • OptionArrow will now duplicate layers and move them by 1 pixel. OptionShiftArrow will duplicate and move by 10 pixels.
  • Optionclicking a layer’s visibility icon will now hide all other layers.
Improvements
  • Zoom performance improvements speed up zooming in documents with many layers.
  • Pressing the Return key while drawing a path will now close the path.
  • Converting text to shape is now much (much) faster.
  • The Repair tool progress bar will no longer be shown when making quick, small repairs.
  • The Brightness adjustment is now more precise in images with extreme tonal ranges.
  • Previously, the Channel Mixer used our perceptual color model to make prettier adjustments. Since it’s more of a functional adjustment rather than a creative one, it now mixes channels purely mathematically.
  • Changing the rulers’ origin will now update the grid to match the new rulers.
  • Pressing and holding the Shift key while changing the rulers’ origin will now snap it to the grid and objects in your composition.
  • When you add a new, untagged layer to a tagged group, it will be assigned the group’s color tag.
  • Attempting to use the Color Fill or Gradient Fill tools on text or shape layers will now create an empty new layer and fill that instead of doing nothing at all.
  • Added an Add Guide command to the View menu’s Guides submenu.
  • Whenever possible, Pixelmator Pro will try to preserve the font face when changing font family.
  • Improved compatibility with certain kinds of text layers in Photoshop documents.
Fixes
  • The orientation of masks in Portrait images exported from the Photos app would be incorrect. Fixed.
  • Using the arrows in the Arrange tool, it was sometimes possible to resize layers to an invalid size. Fixed.
  • Attempting to add effects to extremely tall and narrow layers would occasionally cause Pixelmator Pro to quit unexpectedly. Fixed.

  • The Clone Stamp tool’s source will now be reset after turning Use Same Offset for Each Stroke on or off.
  • An Enter Vectormator Mode command is now available in the View menu, making it possible to give it your own keyboard shortcut and making it a little easier to turn this mode off if you turn it on accidentally.
  • When painting with the Gradient tool, its preview will now update when zooming or panning the canvas.
Fixes
  • When using the Repair tool, a brush size preview would inadvertently appear when clicking the Diameter arrows. Fixed.
  • When changing brush Diameter, the preview was not taking into account canvas zoom. Fixed.
  • When using the Angle arrows of the Transform tool, it would take an extra click to move from 0º. Fixed.
  • The position of the Clone Stamp tool’s source crosshair was incorrect in many situations. It’s now mostly correct but a few more fixes are on the way.

  • When using the Repair tool, a brush size preview would inadvertently appear when clicking the Diameter arrows. Fixed.

Pixelmator Pro 1.3.1 adds support for Portrait Masks, brings a new Comics effect, includes a number of new keyboard shortcuts, and more.

New Features
  • Thanks to Portrait Mask support, Pixelmator Pro will now open photos taken in Portrait mode on iOS 12 together with a layer mask.
  • Pixelmator Pro will now always use tabs by default and remember your window size and position for all new documents.
  • Use the new Comics effect to quickly apply a comic bookstyle to any image — you can find this effect in the Stylize category.
  • A number of new keyboard shortcuts make it easier to select, organize, and duplicate layers.
  • Press the Slash (/) key to quickly lock and unlock layers.
  • OptionLeft bracket ([) and OptionRight bracket (]) let you select one layer up and down.
  • OptionComma (,) and OptionPeriod (.) let you select the top and bottom layer.
  • OptionArrow will now duplicate layers and move them by 1 pixel. OptionShiftArrow will duplicate and move by 10 pixels.
  • Optionclicking a layer’s visibility icon will now hide all other layers.
Improvements
  • Zoom performance improvements speed up zooming in documents with many layers.
  • Pressing the Return key while drawing a path will now close the path.
  • Converting text to shape is now much (much) faster.
  • The Repair tool progress bar will no longer be shown when making quick, small repairs.
  • The Brightness adjustment is now more precise in images with extreme tonal ranges.
  • Previously, the Channel Mixer used our perceptual color model to make prettier adjustments. Since it’s more of a functional adjustment rather than a creative one, it now mixes channels purely mathematically.
  • Changing the rulers’ origin will now update the grid to match the new rulers.
  • Pressing and holding the Shift key while changing the rulers’ origin will now snap it to the grid and objects in your composition.
  • When you add a new, untagged layer to a tagged group, it will be assigned the group’s color tag.
  • Attempting to use the Color Fill or Gradient Fill tools on text or shape layers will now create an empty new layer and fill that instead of doing nothing at all.
  • Added an Add Guide command to the View menu’s Guides submenu.
  • Whenever possible, Pixelmator Pro will try to preserve the font face when changing font family.
  • Improved compatibility with certain kinds of text layers in Photoshop documents.
Fixes
  • Pixelmator Pro was performing slowly in the latest version of macOS on certain 2016, 2017, and 2018 Mac computers. This version includes a workaround with a fix.
  • Due to new font smoothing introduced in macOS 10.14, fonts were thicker on 10.14 than 10.13. Fixed.
  • When dragging & dropping text presets, the preview was incorrect. Fixed.
  • Holding the Z key to choose the Zoom tool would make Pixelmator Pro beep inappropriately. It’s now much better behaved.
  • Layers would incorrectly snap to grids based on nonpixel units. Fixed.
  • New documents created from text or shape layers in the clipboard would not be correctly aligned to the canvas. Fixed.
  • After dragging to rearrange parts of text within a text layer, changes would be undone incorrectly. Fixed.
  • Pixelmator Pro workflows in the Automator app were not working correctly when RAW files would be automatically converted to Pixelmator Pro format using the Auto Enhance action. Fixed.
  • The colors in the Color Picker preview did not correctly match the document’s colors. Fixed.
  • When changing font family, the previous font’s name would sometimes briefly flicker in the menu. Fixed.
  • On macOS Mojave, tab titles would sometimes overlap. Fixed.
  • On macOS High Sierra, text in the About window was the wrong color. Fixed.

Pixelmator Pro 1.3 Prism introduces a range of handy new features that make creating advanced illustrations and designs easier than ever — layer color tags, filtering and search, clipping masks, quick opacity and blending controls, and much more.

New Features
  • Easily colorcode layers using handy color tags to make important objects easier to spot or bring some extra organization to advanced illustrations and designs
  • With layer filtering and search, finding just the layers you’re looking for is simpler than ever.
  • Filter layers according to layer type (images, text, shapes, and groups), color tags, or both.
  • Quickly adjust layer opacity and blending mode right in the Layers sidebar.
  • Use clipping masks to clip the contents of one layer to the outline of another — even layer groups or nested shapes!
  • Add clipping masks from the shortcut menu in the Layers sidebar, by Optionclicking between two layers, or from the Format menu.
  • Release a clipping mask by doubleclicking the arrow in the Layers sidebar.

  • When converting hidden layers into pixels, they will no longer be rasterized into empty layers.
  • Doubleclicking any shape — including Smart Shapes — will now make it editable.
  • Exporting documents with layer styles in effects in Photoshop format has been much improved.
Fixes
  • Fixed several blur issues with converting certain kinds of layers (groups and shapes with effects) into pixels.
  • Copying and pasting selected content would sometimes result in blurring. Fixed.
  • On rare occasions, resizing the crop box while holding the Command key would blur the image or leave 1 pixelwide lines at its edges. Fixed.
  • Documents containing many layers with lots of nondestructive styles and effects would sometimes have unwanted vertical and horizontal artifacts. Fixed.
  • The state of the Sample All Layers option would not be remembered when using the Color Fill and Magic Eraser tool. Fixed.
  • Fixed an issue with using percentages to set grid spacing.
  • Fixed an issue with using drag & drop to rearrange paths in shapes made up of only two paths.
  • Several crash fixes improve the stability of Pixelmator Pro.

What’s New in Pixelmator Pro 1.2.4

Pixelmator Pro 1.2.4 features a redesigned Color Balance adjustment, image scaling algorithms, an improved Grain adjustment, two new Automator actions, and more.

New Features
  • The Color Balance adjustment has been redesigned and can now be edited using color wheels inspired by those used in the cinema industry to color grade films.
  • Along with adjusting the color tints of the shadows, midtones, and highlights, the new Color Balance now includes sliders for adjusting their brightness and saturation as well.
  • A Master wheel lets you adjust the Color Balance of an entire image at once.
  • Color Balance can also be improved automatically using the ML Fix feature, trained on millions of professional photos.
  • When using the Image Size command, you can now choose from three image resizing algorithms — Bilinear, Lanczos, and Nearest Neighbor.
  • Bilinear is the standard resizing algorithm, good for most uses.
  • Lanczos can preserve small details better when upscaling and downscaling.
  • Nearest Neighbor is a popular resizing algorithm for pixel art as it creates​ a blocky look with sharp edges.
  • The Grain adjustment has been improved to apply photographic grain more naturally, especially when an image has small details and large grain particles.
  • Use two new Automator actions — Scale Images and Trim Images — to batch resize images and batch delete transparent or solid colored areas from the edges of images.
