Plugin Concept

Peak Rider 2 is a supremely powerful dynamics plugin in VST, AU, AAX, and RTAS formats. Unlike any other kind of dynamics processor, Peak Rider 2 is like a whole arsenal of FX and mix plugins combined into one, with a totally new approach to handling any kind of audio material.

At its heart, Peak Rider 2 uses three detection modes to analyzes a sidechain signal and creates a smooth, continuous ‘envelope’ from it. This envelope can be split into stereo or frequency bands, EQed, and used to control your main input with 5 unique processing modes. The sidechain can be anything at all, and PR2 can even generate its own signal using a built-in synth.

Whether PR2 uses boost or attenuation totally depends on the sidechain and input material, allowing for endless creative possibilities. Here are just a few uses:

• Make huge boosts and cuts without affecting volume or loudness
• Use a drum track’s own envelope and adjust it, effectively becoming a very powerful multiband transient designer
• Match the peaks of a rhythmic track to a static synth, creating an allnew part full of life and motion
• Level the volume of an unruly vocal by matching it to a set volume
• Saturate and distort any instrument without losing any dynamics at all
• Seamlessly remove mic bleed from a noisy isolated track

Processing Modes

Exact:

The classic, core feature of Peak Rider 2. The sidechain dynamics are applied to the main input, with full control over range and envelope.

Noboost:

Similar to Exact, but does not apply any gain. Instead, the plugin only rides the main input downward as needed.

Duck:

Rides the main input up or down depending on band gain and the ratio of sidechain envelope level to main input level.

Expand:

Similar to a mastering limiter, with a variable output ceiling based on the sidechain’s envelope.

EQ:

Fully featured, super precise parametric EQ with up to 12 bands that compensates for volume changes!
Additionally, there are three detection algorithms which impact how the envelope is generated and analyzed.

Peak:

A real-time, fast peak-meter style envelop designed for controlling transient-heavy material.

RMS:

A real-time smooth envelope designer that is ideal for tonal and elongated material, leaving transients less affected.

Smooth:

A windowed-average envelope generator that uses a variable lookahead, introducing some latency but offering time-accurate detection. This algorithm is very effective on tonal instruments.

A more solid peak detection
Couture transient detection was made more systematic with respect to short events.
The difference is usually subtle, but is easiest to hear with the shortest attack times. You’ll find that the gain change feels more “solid”, as the peaks are processed more evenly.

Tunable Oversampling

If you are a Couture FULL customer you can change the oversampling in Couture, for an extra-edge:
x1 oversampling can be useful to have a very dry transient shaping,
x2 is the default oversampling in Couture,
x4 is an intermediate which is more CPU-conscious than x8,
x8 is a bit expensive CPU-wise but makes aliasing disappear.

x4 and x8 are a bit darker and analog-sounding than other oversampling rates. This is on purpose!
This parameter is only available in the FULL Edition of Couture. The FREE Edition is always oversampled x2. This oversampling applies to both saturation and transient shaping.

Dry Mix knob

You can now mix Dry unprocessed input alongside with the Wet signal.
Such Dry input will not have the phase change caused by the oversampling stage and/or distortion filters: as such it can be used as a kind of “New York transient shaping”.

Faster audio processing

At x2 oversampling, Couture v1.2 goes 40% faster than Couture v1.1.
Fix volume spikes at startup
Couture used to have long and wild volume spikes on instantiation. Sonic outbursts will now stabilize faster at startup.

Interval Les Femmes isn’t quite like anything else you’ve played. It is Insa, Mel and Basia – 3 wonderful female artists who have exclusively performed for this lovely and intimate choir instrument. Strictly speaking Les Femmes is a choir instrument, just layer some unique voices and you will achieve a rich, intimate and bright choir.

But Interval Les Femmes is much more. Inspired by contemporary compositions Interval pursues a new approach into building sounds. It is hard to explain, but in the broadest sense, Interval Les Femmes lets you building unique voice harmonies, organic choir patches and inspiring vocal atmospheres.
You can do things with it you can’t do with anything else.

THE CONCEPT

Interval Les Femmes features two main issues: the kind and unique selection of sound sources (samples) and an unqiue instrument engine to create harmonies.

„Les femmes“- french translated „the women“ is what it says and beyond. In order to achieve a fragile and intimate vocal or choir color we recorded the voices of three incredible artists, each one with different musical background such as jazz, pop and experimental.
Each voice was recorded in several articulations: regular intimate notes, chanting and breathing, and each articulations was recorded in several individual variations.
The result is astonishing. Along with the powerful and unique engine of interval stacking, you get a strong choir instrument which lets you easily create many different voice sounds and colors such as deep choirs, intimate background voices, modern pop patterns, unique voice harmonies or experimental mumbling. But the best way to use Les Femmes is to find out your own way to use this instrument.
For those who wants to get a quick overview of Interval Les Femmes, the instrument has a bunch of presets on boards with gives you a quick acces to the several possibilties of Les Femmes: soundscapes, short variations as used a lot in popular music these days, strong, intimate & intensive layer of voices in legato or experimental patterns.
„Les femmes“ is a very special kind of choir instrument: small, big, intimate or fragile. You can play it pure or with the help of the Interval with a unqiue kind of harmonies. Finally, „Les femmes“ is a perfect combination for your collection of Cinematique Instruments, such as Interval or the intimate piano.

THE STRUCTURE

The fundament of Interval are four separate sound slots which can be simultaneously played. Just click on the slot name to select one of the three voices and its variations to set up your favourite mix of sounds. Each sound can be used only once.
In order to shape the overall sound there are a lot of tools available: attack/ release time, increase/ decrease of the highs and lows, three delays with adjustable feedback, a reverb and and an LFO which works separately for the four sound slots.
After creating your sound, you can now spread the four sound slots separately to each interval step. Just click on the interval nodes to activate or deactivate the corresponding interval. Each interval step has also a separate volume control.
To understand how it works just change the interval (bold number in the centered field) and see what happens when you play a note. (more detailed described at the Engine View). Interval provides four intervals slots. You can access these different intervals by keyswitches (C0 – Eb0) or in chain-mode which skips through the intervals by each key stroke.

Interval Les Femmes are coming in two versions. Both containing all three fabulous vocalists in three intimate as well as fragile articulations. (long, chant, breath). One version provides a natural note length, the other is looped.

Curbed Piano:

The Curbed Piano is a brand new approach of recording and playing pianos.
The idea behind it is to insert a thick piece of fabric or felt between the hammer and the strings. By playing the piano you achieve a very warm and damped piano sound with a very dominant hammer sound.
The sound is very intimate and organic. Additional features are reverse sounds and stuttering sustain.

Intimate + Piano (updated version):

In 2018 we have updated the intimate piano to the Intimate +“ version.
Instead of adding fx sounds to the piano you can now add the realsitsic sound of the hammer (while hitting the strings) to the piano. Beside the option to control the volume of this hammer sound you can control the decay and tone of it. Additionally you can also mix a set of reverse sounds to it.

Intimate Piano:

Intimate Piano is a special recorded set of samples of our beloved Zeither & Winkelmann upright piano. We recorded the piano by a field recorder lying on the ground of it. We have restricted ourselves to record just a very low and gentle velocity level of the piano. This kind of playing along with the unique recording setting results into its charming, warm and intmate sound.

Practice Piano:

The Practice Piano is definitely more than a piano you use just for practice. Recorded in the academy for arts in music in Brisbane/ Australia we are coming out with a piano that sounds real and vibrating. It is very raw and comes along with a „granny“ option that morphs its sound to an old Yamaha piano out of the cellar, where one of us did his first steps ? The sound dirty and vintage.

Upright Piano:

This is our lovely and beloved Zeither & Winkelmann Piano. Our own studio piano is a bright and high quality upright piano for contemporary uses. With editing functions reduced to the main need. You do not have to tweak a lot to get the sound you are aiming for. A nice and warm Piano sound that works just fine for everything.

Soundboard Piano:

The soundboard piano is based on the deconstructed piano. We picked certain carefully sampled layers and put them into a new instrument. You have a knob that lets you morph the sound, so it individually fits in your mix. With the soundboard you get a whole new Piano that sounds somehow familiar but completely different.

The Charakter collection includes six pianos with different options of editing and shaping the sound.
Each of the Pianos offers control over the high and the low frequencies. You can push it to the maximum and it still gives you an original Piano sound that does not sound processed, at all.
All of our Pianos come with eight wonderful reverbs, for every purpose: – Plate, Chamber, Analog, Room, Church, Space, Rich, Stage. –

The ‘Practice Piano’ as well as the ‘Intimate Piano’ provides an „add noise“ knob, which adds some organic string noise attack to the piano. The new pianos “Curbed” and “Intimate+” are equipped with a bunch of reverse sounds as well as the separate hammer sound. All the pianos are coming along with their own special sound shaping option which are special and individual:

The ‘Practice Piano’ provides a ‘Granny’ option which lets you morph into a new slightly detuned piano. It morphs together and creates a sound that feels very old, vintage & warm.
The ‘Intimate Piano’ provides an ‘Add Pot FX’ knob which mixes a weird percussive sound to the piano coming from pots. This gives you a harder attack.
The ‘Upright Piano’ has ‘Warmth’ The name explains itself and enriches your sound, to get the upright sound you like.
The ‘Soundboard Piano’ comes along with ‘Felt morph’ morphs the hammer sound to a felt mallet hit sound. The option ‘Add Perc’ adds a layer of 12 different percussive sound which are also coming from striking on the soundboard spread over the entire range. You can jump through the sounds, the ‘Soundboard Piano’ gives you an own special impression.

KICK

The combined kick is further shaped using effects, envelopes, and sequenced modulation, and can be tuned automatically to a master tune setting, avoiding bass frequency clashes.

BASS

SEQUENCER

Independent step-sequencers for Kick and Bass each offer extensive sequencing and modulation controls – far more than traditional step-sequencers. Every step allows a number of controls, such as note-on, velocity, pitch, length (for bass), and gate. But the real fun starts with the step-modulation controls. Parameter Focus lets you draw in sequence modulation for any Kick or Bass parameter (filter sweeps, for example). Step Locks then allow any number of fixed parameter values for a given sequencer step: Simply click the Lock button for that step then draw in as many settings as you like – just for that step.

Air

Air works as a booster of very high frequencies with a wide bandwidth using a top-notch algorithm.

Mono / Stereo

The Mono / Stereo Split Filter is able to divide the audio signal into a mono and stereo part
based on a frequency.

Back Panel

Adam Monroe Music Electric Bass 1.2 (WIN MAC) DECiBEL

Adam Monroe’s Electric Bass was sampled from a Yamaha BB424x electric bass guitar. The bass was modified so that individual pickups were wired to independent jacks, thus allowing for independent sampling of bridge and neck pickups. Volume and tone pots were bypassed, so resistors were wired in their place to minimize the “ice pick” sound of an electric bass without pots. The pickups were then run into individual Radial 48 active direct boxes and Grace 101 preamps which provided additional gain.

Sampling began by recording began with the target of recording 4 velocity layers with 5 note round-robin. The strings of the bass were kept relatively bright and fresh. Nearly the entire bass was sampled in this manner but the results were unsatisfactory, so the bass was re-sampled from the beginning with 10 velocity layers, 4-note round robin, and mellow strings.

Notes were gently plucked and fiercely attacked, so that playing low velocities generates a warm sound with subtle attack, well higher velocity notes become more percussive. By playing soft or hard, blending between neck and bridge pickups, and applying eq, a variety of tones can be achieved. However, the intention was to make a nice-sounding “utility” bass that blends easily into the mix, and to offer the user a standard go-to bass that can serve as a reference for other bass libraries.

Slide articulations were recorded in three-note round robin and can be triggered via the pitch wheel. Major and minor third slide up and slide downs were recorded for most strings, the exception being open E1 and whenever the slide would place the note beyond the recorded range of the bass. Slides were recorded at a tempo of 120 BPM. Like other notes, slides can be released.

Care was taken to find the best strings on which to sample notes. Strings were cleaned periodically in order to maintain a consistent sound.

ENGINEERING

• The Kontakt version of Adam Monroe’s Electric Bass is crossplatform, and is maintained by Native Instruments, all the programming and effects being done through them. Some simple scripting is done by us. The VST, Audio Unit, and AAX versions are another beast entirely, as the programming falls entirely on AdamMonroeMusic. The goal in any sample library that is also a VSTi (virtual instrument), Audio Unit, or AAX plugin is to attempt to match the performance of the Kontakt Player. With this library, we feel like we have done just that.
• The VST, Audio Unit, and AAX versions include updated, highperformance algorithms that have been improving with each new virtual instrument released by Adam Monroe Music. For example, the buffering algorithm is doublebuffered and multithreaded, which means that buffering performance is fast, even on slower computers, and even in lower latencies. Voices are held and iterated over in a pure, CStyle array. Memory use is comparable to the Kontakt version around 390MB . Because of the solid VST, AU, AAX code base, you can feel confident that the VST, AU, and AAX versions will work just as well as the Kontakt version.
• The VST, AU, and AAX versions also include automatic samplerate conversion supporting 44.1, 48, 88.2, and 96 kHz sample rates.

Why develop a VST, Audio Unit, or AAX version at all? Although a great piece of software, the Full version of Kontakt (required to run 3rd party sample libraries) is expensive. Developing a VST, Audio Unit, or AAX version that anyone can use does not add significant time to the development of an Electric Bass library – most of the time is spent sampling and processing the samples – so it’s a real no-brainer.

Audio engineering is a large part of creating a VST, AAX, or Audio Unit plugin, but the sounds of this electric bass library have barely been processed. No eq tweaks were made, as the tone can be shaped dramatically by blending between pickups. Brightness can be dialed back with the “tone” knob, which is essentially a HPF.
