Audio Damage AD049 Enso v1.1.0

Audio Damage has announced the immediate availability of its latest plugin for Windows, Mac and Linux.

An architecturally unique and sonically characterful looping toolkit for producers and live performers, inspired by both modern looper pedals and vintage tape-based setups, Enso combines elegant and intuitive UI design with a deep but accessible feature set and stellar sound quality.

Enso’s operation will be immediately familiar to users of hardware looper pedals or plugins such as Ableton Live’s bundled Looper. Start playback of the host DAW, hit Enso’s record button and capture your instrumental performance into a loop of whatever length you like, up to ten minutes (five minutes on iOS). Then, without stopping playback, overdub further passes to create layered grooves, complex harmonic textures, or dense, evolving soundscapes.

Beyond those basics, though, Enso takes software looping into new territory. Two Overdub modes configure the plugin for conventional looper pedal behavior or Frippertronics-style ‘dual tape deck’ manoeuvres, affecting the handling of the Feedback parameter for an endless range of layering possibilities; and up to four Sectors can be effortlessly defined, each with its own start and end points, for on-the-fly rearrangement of the loop.

With Enso, time and motion become truly fluid, as speed and direction are handled completely independently for playback and recording, the ‘through-zero’ bipolar Speed controls smoothly transitioning from forwards to backwards, and vice versa, in real time. Want to record forwards at half speed, while simultaneously playing the buffered loop in reverse at 1.25x? Of course you do…

Onboard tape-style saturation, filtering and chorus effects bring dirt, frequency-shaping and stereo thickening to the party; and a comprehensive MIDI assignment system makes it a snap to set your MIDI pedal or button controller up for operation of all Enso’s buttons and switches. With its animated play and record heads, meanwhile, the looping waveform display provides a clean, clear visual representation of the potentially mind-bending temporal acrobatics taking place, letting you get a handle on exactly what’s happening at a glance.

Giving you everything you need for limitlessly creative looping, on stage and in the studio, Enso is one of Audio Damage’s most beautiful
ly realized plugins yet, and an empowering addition to any musician’s arsenal of effects

Audio Damage AD037 Kombinat Tri v3.0.6

From mild tone-shaping or adding a bit of grit to full-on total waveform destruction, Kombinat Tri is a complete toolbox of sonic warfare, and a complete top-to-bottom rebuild of our popular Kombinat series.

With 13 different options in each of the three distortion engines (plus pass-through), Kombinat Tri is capable of sophisticated and unique sounds. Want to add a ring mod to the low end, a mild tube clip to the mids, and a bit-reduction algorithm to the high end? No problem. Want to run your signal through three sine-warps or fuzz algorithms in series? This is your box.

Kombinat’s signal structure allows for a fairly broad palette of sounds, as each segment of the overall effect is a versatile tool in its own right. On the front end is a full “DJ-style” band-killer EQ; this leads to the three distortion engines, which may be used in multi-band mode for subtle surgery, or in series mode for complete signal destruction. The engines lead to a multi-mode filter with 12 different topologies, and then on to a compressor which we have configured for one-control operation.

Taken as a whole, Kombinat is a tweaker’s paradise, yet designed so that it is easy to just grab one of the presets and touch it up a bit to suit the source material.

FEATURES
Crossover: Kombinat Tri features a DJ-style three-band isolator EQ for band-killing effects and extreme tone-carving on the front end. This leads to the three distortion engines, which can be run in crossover (multi) mode, or in series.

Multiple Distortion Types: Kombinat Tri has 13 different distortion and tone-shaping algorithms, and you can mix-and-match, with each of the three bands getting its own selector. From subtle tube-style clipping to the bizarre distorto-delay of the Nerd Rage algorithm, Kombinat Tri can cover all the bases without unnecessary complexity.

Feedback: If the algorithms weren’t enough, Kombinat Tri has an internal feedback control, tied to an envelope follower. Results may vary, but are always hairy.

Filter: Kombinat Tri has 12 different filter topologies, from subtle 2-pole lowpass, through synth-style filters, to surgical notch. Several are self-resonant.

One-Kontrol Kompressor: A favorite feature of the original Kombinat and Kombinat Dva, the one-knob compressor, tuned for collapsing distorted signals to roadkill, remains in Kombinat Tri.

Mix Control: Kombinat Tri adds an oft-requested feature: a mix knob for better control over the signal path.

Presets: Kombinat Tri includes a selection of presets from Kombinat and Kombinat Dva, some all-new presets to take advantage of the new features, and a selection of Designer presets from Ken Flux Pierce and Don Gunn.

ENSO CHANGES
V1.0.15
>> Much smooth. Very declicking. Wow. We have done a lot of work to minimize edge- and corner-case clicking, principally in the Sectors. You will find that, in general, the Sector features work much better, and there will be no (or minimal, in the case of legato source material) clicks when resizing and moving sectors while playback is occuring.
>> Settings were not recalled correctly when restoring a session in some hosts. This has been fixed.
>> MIDI notes added as sources in the CC Control section. You can now assign a MIDI note to a momentary button the same way you would a controller button.
>> In all quantization modes, the playback and record speed controls now go _towards_ zero when clicking or dragging down, and _away_ from zero when clicking or dragging up. There were some differences of opinion with respect to the various speed quantizations, and this has been remedied.
>> The main mode quantization now affects every momentary button except Trigger and Overdub. What this means: sector switching, RTZ, and sector clear will now respect the quantization. So if you have it set to quarter notes, your sector will switch on the beat.
>> A whole heap of small bug fixes, improvements, and optimizations. We tend to write “optimizations” in the changelog to make it look like we did something clever, but in point of fact we, and every other software company on the planet, use “optimizations” to mean “now that we’re not in a dead rush to get this thing out the door so we can make some money and not, you know, go out of business or whatever, we have the luxury of going back and cleaning up this rat’s nest and making it look somewhat presentable.” Stuff like that.
>> Factory presets added back to the iOS version. They somehow got kicked out of bed in the multiple updates that platform needed.
>> macOS preset location moved from Old N’ Busted “Application Support/Audio Damage” to the New Hotness, “~/Music/Audio Damage”. If you have presets stored in the old location, you will need to manually move them to the new one.
>> Ubuntu Linux x64 VST and VST3 added to the desktop payload.

Audio Damage AD036 Dubstation 2 v2.1.2

The original dub delay plugin and still the best! Dubstation 2 takes our most popular product and adds a whole raft of new features, including a dual mode for separate control over the left and right delay times, ping-pong, a new feedback saturation algorithm, and an LFO. Along with an all-new procedural and Retina-friendly user interface and (FINALLY!) ProTools compatibility, this represents a major leap forward for one of our signature products.

All those bells and whistles aside, the heart of Dubstation is our painstaking bucket-brigade delay model. Often imitated, but never duplicated, Dubstation has been the go-to plugin for that sound for over a decade, used in thousands of commercial productions, and with good reason. With the addition of the LFO and saturation controls, Dubstation has moved in to the realm of tape delay emulation as well, and is a sonic Swiss Army knife for delay.

Audio Damage AD042 Axon v2.1.3

Axon 2 is a drum synth driven by artificial intelligence. (Well, “intelligence” might be a strong word. Artificial something-or-other.) An experimental instrument, Axon uses a modified artificial neural network as a sequencer, and features seven FM-based percussion voices, that are really a single 18-operator FM voice.

If that sounds weird, you ain’t seen nothing yet. It is surprisingly intuitive once you get the knack of it, and is capable of all-new, complex rhythms that repeat in surprising ways. It often gets referenced as a “random sequence generator,” but there is nothing random in Axon; it is entirely determinative.

The sequencer features seven “neurons” that trigger a voice and send a pulse when they have received a predetermined number of pulses. You can wire the output of any neuron to the input of any other (with built-in loop detection to prevent runaway feedback), and in this manner pre-program the artificial neural network without having to go through a “learning” phase.

The seven individual drum voices, each triggered by its attendant neuron, are 2-operator FM voices in a configuration to best make percussion sounds, with additional FM and AM busses that all voices send to and receive from. Each voice has a HPF, distortion circuit, and white noise generator to provide a full range of percussion-oriented voicing individually, while interacting with each other in new and unique ways.

FEATURES
• Artificial Neural Network sequencer features seven neurons, and is easily programmed to create strange new repeating rhythms.

• Seven FM percussion voices that also buss together to create a single monolithic complex percussion synthesizer.

• Full mixer with pan, level, mute, and solo on each voice.

• Built-in stereo delay with X/Y pad control over feedback and filter frequency, for live playability.

• MIDI in and out, for driving Axon from DAW and hardware sequencers, or driving your drum rack or other samples from Axon.

• Internal transport for non-synchronized playback.

• Resizable vector-based user interface.

• Drawn reciprocation dingle arm to reduce sinusoidal depleneration.

• XML-based cross-platform, human-readable preset system, with copy/paste, for easy transferring of your own presets and third-party offerings.

Axon 2 Changelog
V2.1.3
New:
>>> Linux VST3 added to payload.
>>> The empty “Default” preset the plugin loaded on instance was, according to extensive user feedback, “terrible” and “a horrible racket” and it was variously wondered if it could “you know, die in a fire or whatever.” In response to these helpful comments, we have changed it so that, on instance, Axon now loads factory preset 15 – Braindance. If you would like some other state as the default, save a preset named “Default” in the User folder and Axon will load that on instance instead.
Fixes And Changes:
>>> New hotness preset manager added. Old and busted preset dropdown removed.
>>> Several small bug fixes you won’t notice now if you didn’t notice before.

Audio Damage AD043 Filterstation v2.1.0

Filterstation2 is the Audio Damage take on the classic serial/parallel/stereo dual filter topology, made famous (and some would say “indispensable”) by the Sherman Filterbank and its many clones. With twelve filter algorithms, an envelope follower with stereo sidechain input, a full FSU section for extra signal hacking, and an easy-to-use interface, Filterstation2 is a valuable addition to any producer’s toolkit.

Features
• Twelve different filter algorithms, including MS20 emulation and our classic 914 bandpass and Filterpod lowpass models.

• VCA mode for tremolo and gate effects.

• LFO with twelve different patterns, and both internal and tempo sync modes.

• Envelope follower for dynamic control of filter frequency.

• Serial, parallel, and true stereo operating modes.

• Sidechain input for external signal to envelope follower.

• Easy-to use interface for quick programming.

• Vector-based resizable GUI.

• Cross-platform XML-based preset manager.

CHANGES IN V2.1.0
New:
> Filterstation 2 got the new-style preset manager. You can now nest folders up to 2 deep, and you have full control over the factory and user preset folders.

> The 32-bit Windows versions were removed. Filterstation 2 is now 64-bit only on all platforms.

> Linux VST and VST3 versions added (64-bit Ubuntu)

> On macOS, the preset folder location has been changed to ~/Music, to allow for Apple’s sandboxing agenda. You can find the new factory preset folder in ~/Music/Audio Damage/Filterstation once you have instanced the plugin at least once. If you have presets in the old location you have saved, you will need to move them manually. You can find them in /Library/Application Support/Audio Damage/Filterstation. We tried to move them with a script, but that ended in sadness and tears for everyone involved. (Quanta owners will remember the bad old days of a couple months ago.) Better to do it manually so there is no chance of screwing up due to random permissions problems.

> Also on macOS, the minimum OS has been changed to 10.9. This is the earliest macOS we can safely build for while also allowing for Catalina and Big Sur security theatre.

Audio Damage AD046 Quanta v1.1.8

Quanta is a full-featured ten-voice true stereo granular synthesizer, with up to a hundred 1000ms grains per voice, and full control over the grain state, with direct randomization and modulation of most parameters. Drag-and-drop a sample (WAV, AIFF, Ogg, or FLAC) on to the window and go to work.

Synthesize!
With two multi-mode filters (with LP, HP, BP and notch in 2-pole and 4-pole topologies), and a “sidecar” virtual-analog oscillator and noise generator that can be used in addition to, or injected into, the grain engine, Quanta is a fully capable subtractive synth in its own right, and will work as a granular or subtractive (or both) synth without any sample at all.

Modulate!
Quanta has mod coming out its ears. First up are four of our new FEGs (Flexible Envelope Generator), a 99-point looping function generator with optional host tempo sync. Then add two arbitrary-waveshape LFOs, a multi-source sample-and-hold module, and fully user-controllable MIDI assignments, with nearly every control on the panel as a destination.

Control!
Quanta is customizable to your taste and playing style. With full MPE support, it can take advantage of the extended control set of your Linnstrument, Seaboard, Soundplane, Continuum, or other MPE controller, and support for TUN files lets you use tuning tables. The resizable Hi-DPI GUI lets you adjust the size to match your visual needs, and the cross-platform preset mechanism lets you share your creations with your friends and collaborators, no matter what system they are using.

CHANGES IN V1.1.8

New:
> We have replaced the original Quanta preset manager with the New Hotness we created for Phosphor, and subsequently added to Continua. This is a much better preset manager, and you now have three layers of folders, and are able to move things around and create your own top-level folders if you want.

> All versions now have the on-screen keyboard that was originally only in the iOS standalone.

Fixes:
> The preset folder move script that was introduced in the macOS installer for v1.1.2 has been removed. It was, quite literally, far more trouble than it was worth. On macOS, Quanta’s preset folder is now in ~/Music/Audio Damage. If you see the “Download Factory Content” button on an update, you didn’t install the last two versions, so the preset folder location has been moved. You can either grab the factory content again, or physically move your original preset folder to the new location. (You can find the original in /Application Support/Audio Damage. Just move the entire /Quanta folder to ~/Music/Audio Damage.)

> Additionally, the signing problems that started cropping up in V1.1 have been entirely solved. Hopefully. We think. If you’re still experiencing Gatekeeper issues, an old certificate is hanging around, and the solution is to delete all versions of Quanta, re-scan in your host (to clear the cache if it has one), and then install this version.

> One for the Windows people, and not a “fix” as such: we have discovered a problem with HiDpi scaling in Live (and maybe other hosts). If you’re running on a HiDpi system with the auto-scaling off, the drop target is not correctly scaled. We don’t know if this is a bug in JUCE or a bug in Live. The drop target is still there. It is just much smaller than it should be, and resides in the lower right hand corner of the waveform display. The short-term solution is to either drop in the lower right hand corner (you’ll be able to tell you’re in the right place because you’ll get that lit-up surround) or to turn on auto-scaling for Quanta. Then the target will be its correct size. We’ve pinged both the JUCE people and Live for an answer on this.

> Many small bug fixes and optimizations, as usual.

Audio Damage AD051 Continua V1.0.21

Continua is a virtual analog synth with a twist: a continuously morphable threesome of oscillators. With three interconnected controls defining the wave shape, Continua has a virtually limitless supply of waveforms, especially when you add cross modulation and noise in to the mix.

An immediately intuitive three-oscillator analogue-style synth with two filters, up to 16 unison voices, copious polyphonic modulation sources and three onboard effects, Continua puts highly controllable waveform morphing at the centre of its architecture and workflow. Bringing the deft harmonic shifts of wavetable synthesis to mind, Continua’s oscillators sweep seamlessly from outputting sine through square to saw waves; each of the four LFOs transitions from a double sine to square, via triangle waveshapes; and the dual independent filters morph continuously through low-pass, band-pass, high-pass and notch responses. Skew and Warp controls enable further manipulation of oscillator and LFO waveforms, and all morphing controls can be modulated for pads and textures that constantly evolve right at the oscillator/filter level.

There isn’t a single knob in Continua that can’t be modulated, from those controlling the oscillators, filters and effects to the parameters of the modulators themselves. Four LFOs, two ADSR and two multi-stage envelope generators, a Sample & Hold generator, two XY pads and eight macros are freely and effortlessly assignable by right-clicking any target control. And with every LFO and envelope being fully polyphonic, the expressiveness of your performances needs know no bounds, especially when using an MPE-compatible controller.

Like the oscillators and filters, Continua’s three effects are tilted towards the production of sustained, ambient-orientated sounds. The Reverb is particularly notable, housing a custom algorithm geared up for very long, dense, heavily modulated tails; while the Chorus and Delay modules bring voice-stacked thickening and evocative spatialisation.

CHANGES IN V1.0.21

>> New Preset Manager. Due to fairly convincing evidence that the preset manager in Continua “sucked,” and also apparently “wasn’t good,” we wrote a new one. It made its first appearance in Phosphor 3, and now is in Continua.

>> Fixed: LFO activity indicator did not accurately reflect phase. Now it does.

>> Fixed: Only one LFO activity indicator appeared no matter how many voices were active. Now there is one for each voice.

>> Fixed: There was some occasional audible stepping in the filter frequency controls. Smoothers have been added.
>> Fixed, Hopefully: The macOS certificate problems from the previous versions. See earlier changelog entries for this saga. If you experience any problems with Continua “disappearing” or whatever, just delete all versions (VST, VST3, AAX, and AU) and re-install and you should be back on the program. Hopefully.

Changes In V3.0.4
> 32-bit Windows versions removed from installer payload. Kombinat Tri is 64-bit only going forward. In addition, macOS versions have been signed and notarized, and the minimum macOS system is now 10.11.
> Mac presets moved from Library/Application Support/Audio Damage/Kombi3/Presets to ~/Music/Audio Damage/Kombinat3. If you have any user presets stored in the old location, you can manually move them to the new one. A new factory library will be created in the new location. After you have moved your user presets, you can delete the zombie folder.
> x64 Ubuntu VST version added.
> Screen scaling and OpenGL UI removed. These were “bridge” methods to deal with Windows HiDpi while it was in a state of flux. Removing these methods should vastly improve the user experience for people with low-end and on-motherboard video cards.
> Rebuilt with all current SDKs and APIs

Audio Damage’s painstakingly modeled bucket-brigade delay has been the go-to plugin for that sound for over a decade, used in thousands of commercial productions, and with good reason. Dubstation’s intuitive topology brings the mojo of yesteryears hardware delays to your DAW.

Dubstation 2 takes our most popular product and adds a whole raft of new features. With the addition of LFO and saturation controls, Dubstation 2 now fully emulates a vintage bucket-brigade delay, and the new dual mode for separate control over the left and right delay times and ping-pong make it a Swiss Army knife for delay effects.

HIGHLIGHTS

Double up!

What’s better than one delay line? Two! And for that very reason, Dubstation 2 introduces dual mode, exposing separate delay time controls for its left and right channels as well as ping-pong mode for tried-and-true cross-feedback effects making your delays alternate between channels.

Degrade!

Dubstation 2 features analoge-style saturation as well as low- and high-cut filters inviting you to shape its sound from fuzzy-warm to spiky-bright. True to its bucket-brigade roots, the plugin’s spectral character changes with increasing delay times. Whether you’re looking to add some old-school warmth to your downtempo production or wreak feedback havoc at your next live gig – we got you covered!

Modulate!

Get things moving with Dubstation’s delay-time modulation. Use the integrated Low-Frequently Oscillator to Introduce subtle chorusing, doubling effects or chirpy pitch sweeps – made possible by Dubstation’s emulation of vintage delay hardware.

Loop!

As if Dubstation didn’t give you enough ways to repeat audio, engaging its ‘loop’ switch turns the plugin turns into a squeaky clean digital looper that won’t degrade your signal. Missing some of that dirt? Tweak the filter and saturation controls to find that sweet spot for your next one-person jam session – or leave your audience with a little something for their way out of the venue.

What’s New in Audio Damage AD036 Dubstation 2.1.0a

  • There are no changes in the Windows and Linux installers. Only the OSX installer is updated. This is to address a problem Apple introduced by “accidentally” altering one of our signing certificates.
  • This is a necessary update for any Dubstation user on macOS after Mojave 10.14.5, as Gatekeeper will blacklist the plugins. If you triggered the blacklisting, you will almost certainly need to do a re-scan of the plugin to clear the blacklist. If you are a Live user, you can opt-click the Rescan button in Files/Folders to force a rescan and clear the blacklist.
